• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Has anyone tried Pot for self medicating purposes?

If someone were thinking of using pot for self medicating purposes(experimenting)...just to relax, to even out their moods, would they be better off keeping it to themselves or talking to their children about it...being open?

Children do learn from grade one up that all drugs are bad...

That is what I do. I tried, well, everything. There were so many side effects. I couldn't function. I felt like a zombie.

This was something I ran by my doc. My head doc. He said he understands why I do this and he has known others who do as well.

I find that I have less swings. I do still get manic and depressed but it doesn't seem to be as often. I am not recommending you do this. I am just telling you my experience.

I don't treat it as anything other than medication, as I would with any other herb. My daughter is only 5, so we have yet to have an in depth drug discussion.

Have I managed to add anything to this discussion? lol

ETA: I will let my daughter know, when she is old enough to understand my diagnosis, that this is the way I medicate. I am honest with her about everything thus far, and will continue to do so.

I have been self-medicating for a few years now. I feel it works for me and my situation.

My husband and my sister are the only two that know. They both say that it seems to help my amount of swings. I feel better than I did on doctor prescribed drugs.

The thing is pot can be a depressive drug. I know many say it takes the edge off. But if you are taking proper meds and changing the things you can, there is no need for it. Pot impairs your thoughts so you are not thinking properly. But usually while on it you cannot see how it impairs you. I use to smoke it all the time and looking back I can now see. I do not recommend this and niether would most psychatrist .

I personally would agree with child of the king. It is a depressant and saps motivation and confuses thinking and judgement. I choose not to go there as it can make this illness worse and with it addiction potential can also lead to a subatance abuse problem and and a dual diagnosis situation. So even apart from the legality issues etc. (And I even live in a state that allows medical marijuana cards) It is something I choose to stay away from. My son has used it and speak of it's calming effects, but it he also relates how it dumped his motivation and mood into the toilet and he does better without it. I know of several others who have self medicated in the past and feel far helthier and more control without pot in their system.

You are right about it being a depressive. It is not something I can do when I am in a down. It makes it worse. It's when those rare manic episodes hit that I find it helps the most.

I just can't do pills. We have no insurance, because hubby is self employed in a small business, and out of the several I tried, I felt, well, like not me.

It is not something I recommend for anyone, it's just something I find works for me during certain times. :)

This thread will remain closed as we can't allow posts that discuss drugs in the Recovery Forums, which include Recovery, Mental Health and Physical Heath. I realize this is a common topic, however please understand that we always recommend that you see your doctor if you have an illness and that you take medications as prescribed. Self-medicating for any illness, especially mental illness, can be extremely dangerous.
