  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

ps:
Heard the book was quite good: didn't read it.

The movie was THE worst movie I have seen in years....neh, DECADES. I WISH that movie could have been banned.

Seriously, who ever told you the book was good..... never take their advice again, the movie and the book are very close alike. The book, despite having almost constant action from page one was boring. I've never in my life seen an author who could do that. It's kind of impressive actually.

Atheism means that you BELIEVE there is no G/god. It is still commonly held to be a belief system and those atheists who say it is otherwise, don't realize the hypocracy of their stance...

Of course it's a belief. Kind of. But then, what isn't?
Do you know that the sun will rise tomorrow, or is that just a very very strong belief based on the fact that so far it happened every single day of recorded history?
Do you know that the grass in front of your house is green (assuming there is some of course :D), or do you believe that your eyes show you the correct colors and that your brain interprets the neural signals correctly?

The evidence is what matters. And from the atheist point of view, the evidence for the existence of any deity is... well... kind of lacking.

What you are describing is CLOSER to agnosticism: Perhaps you'll find your "Most atheists" fit into that catagory and not "atheist"

Yeah, the borderline between atheism and agnosticism seems quite shady to me too. But then, I can live with that. ;)

You put 2b in bold, what about 2a?

You're right in that atheism is a statement about belief. It means not believing in god, not all atheists declare that there is no god.

Agnosticism is about knowledge, it means not knowing enough to know if there is a god or not.

Sorry, but you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

Being an atheist doesn't necessarily mean you believe that there isn't a God(a possitive claim) it means you lack belief in one.

Try edjimicatin yurself befer talkin about stuff.

Start here.

But they're not ill-informed. They may very well be better informed than you.
Look, I think atheists are just plain wrong. Whatever the reason for that is, I believe you're wrong. Are you trying to tell me I shouldn't state that belief? Because that concept would infringe on my free speech.
It's not like I'm trying to hurt anybody, as a matter of fact, I was trying to avoid hurting anybody by the way I worded it. I try to avoid condescension, as it gets me nowhere. But, really, you seem to be saying that, no matter how I express my belief that atheists are wrong, I'm being condescending by simply stating that belief.

The problem is not so much with your belief that atheists are wrong, it's that you consider them ill-informed, as if you are the arbiter of what makes someone suitably knowledgable to be considered right. I'm merely pointing out that many many atheists are better informed on the matter than you are.

I don't much care whether you believe we are wrong, but don't for a second suggest that it's because we're all ill-informed when it's undeniable that not all of us are.

Thanks for the clarification. I was hoping that what I thought I was reading wasn't correct.

I suppose one of the best ways to word my original statement may have been "however wrong I believe they are" or "however much I may disagree with them".

Thanks,
Rachel

So there are people who believe it is possible to know anything of lasting value without there being GOD?

From Websters:
Lasting: existing or continuing a long while.

A: "Cooking is of Value"

B: "Cooking has existed for possibly 800,000 Years . A Period I consider "a long while"

C: I (a weak atheist) can cook. I think that contradicts you assertion.
