• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Update: I've been diagnosed with non-epileptic seizures also called psychogenic seizures. Apparently stress related. No meds, still having them. Mostly in the early morning or at night. They aren't as long and they are more gentle than they used to be. Sometimes I wake up with a headache and will be tired like I didn't sleep, but I did, so I think I hav them when I sleep.

I was just hospitalized for having a seizure on Tuesday, so this is all interesting to me. I was so embarrassed by having a seizure in public!

I'm currently taking Levetiracetam at the moment, which says that it's used to treat epilepsy. It's funny to me because just five days ago, I had no idea that I had epilepsy!
Out of curiosity is there anything in particular that made you embarrased or is it more that generally you just don't like to stand out or something else? Obviously it would be best if we never had seizures or if we do then we are in a safe place where we won't risk injury eg lounge chair at home or in bed but that isn't always the case

I just don't like to have people make a fuss over me, haha. I feel bad for the people who had to call 911 when I had my seizure, for I don't remember any of it, and I hope it wasn't too scary for them.

Yeah I can understand that. Was a bit hard when I had a seizure in the middle of a church service and the minister insisted on going to the hospital with me. He got to break the news to my wife who was in hospital after having given birth the night before!

I don't know what mine are called. They used to be Grand Mal. The Grand Mal seizures stopped on their own after a few years. I stopped taking the medicine and now I have these seizures that are not able to be seen on the outside except by the stare in my eyes.

My doctor probably told me and Iforgot. They cause me to lose focus, "fade away" or "space out" but its not really spacing out its a mini seizure.

I take Tegratol.

Mine may be related to my childhood epilepsy (when i had grand mal i was a child)

Well technically I don't have epilepsy because I don't have big seizures often enough. But three big ones I had were grand mal. Mine are caused by photostrobing or over stimulation like at a best buy or new york. Such as big crowds with lots of stuff going on causes mine. If I can avoid it I still will lose my vision for anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. So people have to walk me since I literally become blind. But I've had training for when that happens.

My first grand mal at 16 is what caused my brain injury. Which wiped out most of my memories, schooling...etc. Dropped my IQ from 148 to 109. The other two messed with my vision and things like that. I can honestly say it destroyed my life. But even so now I call it a blessing though. Through trials I have become a stronger christian, even if at first I was mad at God over it. Granted my doctor said if I were to have another grand mal anytime soon my odds are higher of going into a permanent coma because my brain is not healing well. But getting married soon I have papers that say I want to be kept alive.

Most of the meds didn't do much or they put on lots of weight. The current one doesn't add weight really, but it doesn't make me lose any either. I am on a combo of meds for headaches, vision and seizures though. I think the one is called Vimpat. I also have an seizure at night. Sometimes it can happen twice a week, other times not for a month. They don't effect me really except for having to rest for a day. Doctors said they don't have diagnosis for them though since they are hard to monitor.

Anyone have horror stories about their seizures?
I remember I was in a seizure study ward place for a week. They took me off my meds and limited my food. They were wanting to provoke a seizure so they could monitor me and give me a better diagnosis over all. Every day I got a fresh IV in my arm. And every day they came in with a strobe light. I feared it every time.

Near the end of the week I was so overwhelmed and stressed that when my parents came and encouraged me that I had 2 days left I threw my food tray across the room. One of the few times I've ever exploded like that. >.<

But what was a nightmare about it even more was the woman who was maybe 22 next to me (well in the next room). SHe was a mother of a young boy. Her mother was there every day. But every hour or so she would hav a violent seizure and you could hear her scream in terror as she also mumbled obviously.

It made me cry so many times. I couldn't imagine being in her shoes being married with a child and not really being able to still be a mom or wife often (her husband left her when the seizures started a year before). One night the mother walked out of the room in tears and I told my mom to bring her in my room (the mother). So we brought her in and prayed for her daughter and for the family enduring it obviously. Such a experience.

I know for me I used to become a scared of going out for risk of having one in public. But now I am not scared as much as I am safe about knowing where I can and can't go. Which for my friends I "had" annoyed them that I couldn't be do things like go to amusement parks.

I have a question I have Seizure is there something wrong with me? Also many have said medience sinful yet medience was very common in bibicial times. Also Jesus himself said the sick should go to a doctor not the health. As well as the word pharmakia should simply mean poisoner. There are two meaning.

topbul1d.gif
A poisoner: a murderer who uses toxic potions to kill humans by stealth.
topbul1d.gif
A person who goes around spreading dissention - poisoning people's minds. This second fits in two what paul is saying on false teachers.

What should I do stop taking them or taking my pills. My act fine and the same when I take them.

Different words with different meanings can come from the same root word. As you pointed out there were doctors in biblical times and Jesus quote while on a different topic would still suggest there is nothing unbiblical about taking medication. If you have concerns about if your medication is working or not I would urge you to continue taking it and discuss with your specialist. If like me you have trouble expressing yourself then prepare some notes before and take them with you to remind yourself of the questions you want to ask and points you would like to make. Just stopping medication because some extreme groups say it is wrong or one word has a definition that seems wrong is unwise. The majority of christians would agree there is nothing wrong with following good advice from doctors. As it says in proverbs "Ignore good advice and you are asking for trouble"

From having a look myself pharmika seems to actually mean drugs. In times gone by certain drugs were common amongst those who practiced withcraft which is why some say they are the same however I beleive that was a cultural interpretation rather than proper God inspired interpretation.

I have had epilepsy since I was 16. I started off with petite mal seizures and had my first gran mal when I was 19. I have been on more meds than I can shake a stick at over the years. I have stumbled across several that I am allergic to and many that just plumb don't work for me. I am currently on Depakote (1250 in the morning and 1500 at night), Keppra (500 morning and 500 night), and Tegretol (100 morning and 200 night), then the Vegas Nerve Stimulator which was implanted two years ago. I had been working from the time I was 14 to the age of 35.

My seizures had become so frequent that I was no longer able to work. I had been managing stores for a company for 10 years and worked my way up to Asst Territory Manager. I never had a seizure while driving, but came close a few times. I spent several years not driving...not fun. So my family and I sold our home and moved to an area not so rural, but still had that country feel. Once the implant was working and I got my license back I still was not cleared to work again. So I ran for public office and I serve at the will of the people and have been doing that for a few years now.

I also work in our church doing the Will of the Lord and working with kids in our youth program. That public service is working on the school board and working on four of its committees. I also serve on the local PTA. I have to do something to pass the time and what better way than serving our Lord and trying to make our community a better place.
