  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I thought we could have a generic thread for any movies that we're seen lately, but the hype isn't enough to give them their own thread. Anything you've seen recently at the cinema. We'll all be out of time a bit because of our different countries, but we can make do.

I recently saw "TimeLine" and I was very pleasantly surprised. I was not a willing viewer. The previews made it look like the typical action flick. Which I suppose it was with one change. This one actually had a plot, and no holes that I picked up. The action is non-stop, and for the most part isn't predictable within half an hour of the moving starting. I predicted one of the conclusions and if anything that actually made the movie more enjoyable. I wanted to know how they were going to get there. Those I was with didn't pick up a single thing.

I'd give it 4*. One of the better movies I've seen in a long time.

I saw Cold Mountain last week and quite liked it. I'm thinking it's more of a chick flick. Normally I don't like sad/drama type movies (I don't like to pay to cry!), but I enjoyed this one! And Rene Zellweger(sp) was a riot!

By the way, what's your rating system - 5 stars? I would give
this a 4 1/4.

I just saw Waking Life. I hadn't heard of it until last night, and it was beautiful. It is all animated, but in an odd sort of way so that it seems real. One of the best movies I've ever seen. Has anyone seen it, or even heard of it?

I only saw a clip of it--when the professor is talking to the girl (sorry, don't know anyone's names in it) about existentialism. a lot of people have recommended it to me, and I actually almost picked it up the other night, but instead I saw Morvern Callar. I do want to see Waking Life at some point, it intrigued me....

Oh you should see it. Especially since you're an artist; the art style is brilliant. And the overall movie is great too. Check it out definitely.

just recently saw Waking Life, and yeah, it was so worth it. Definitely made me think a lot as well. i'm trying to lucid dream now, as well, although not to much avail....yet

I also just saw a french film, Man on the Train, which I rather enjoyed, except the ending was rather weak, in my opinion. But overall, I thout it was pretty good.

I just saw Cold Creek Manor last night... ugh... It was so slow. LOL. I was dissapointed cuz it was supposed to be scary and we're sittin there like... "uh... hello... where's the scariness..." it took forever to pick up and then the "scary" part only lasted like 15 minuets. BIG dissapointment. I like Dennis Quaid (Awesome in Frequency) but that movie was just sad.... not the good sad either... lol.
We watched School of Rock last night. No dirty language (the occasional alternate word for butt... nothing serious) very funny. VERY funny. LOL. They did a good job.

Films watched this weekend:

That Touch of Mink with Cary Grant - nominated for three oscars. I watched it for the second time with my partner and we liked it as much as we did the first (Cary Grant...mmmmmm).

My Mother's Castle - a French classic about memories of a childhood in the mountians. Very innocent and charming and I can see why the film is always given a top rating. My favorite part is where the young boy is alternately in love with: the hills, a boy who knows how to trap birds, a girl who is haughty and has thick calves, the boy again, the girl again and the hills again. Ahh, the passions of youth.

Intolerable Cruelty - I didn't think much of it, even as a Coen Brothers film. As my partner said - "A little over the top"

Memories of Murder - the Korean smash hit for last year and probable sweep for this years Hong Kong Film awards. It was really good. A film about a series of true murders that occurred in the 80's in Korea - called the "Korean Jack the Ripper" - but the story is told in the amazing character development that Korean films are so good at (see The Foul King if you want another example).

Really, it was that good.....? I read the book, but after seeing the previews for the movie, I thought they probably turned it into some Hollywood cheap action flick. Hmmm.....maybe I'll have to go see it then...... by the way, the book was great.
