  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Your best virus security tip:
Don't download attached files from people you don't know, and even if you know the sender, ask them if they sent you the e-mail and attachment before you open it.

-^.^-

Agh, my e-mail box just froze. I have to go out of here a little while, lol. . .

Don't open any weird looking things. :)

Stick with that and I think you're pretty good.

IF you are on a network, MAKE SURE you password protect your drives in some way... that way if a virus DOES get opened on another computer, it can't spread to yours (can't get through the password protection ;))

:)

DNAunion: Okay.

What I had in mind was more along the lines of protecting your own network or PC from attacks launched from the Interent.

Topics such as remote packet sniffing, IP spoofing, DNA spoofing, DDoS, etc. I know a little about these things but was wanting to learn more.

PS:  Make that DNS spoofing, not DNA spoofing.  I guess I've typed "DNA" so many times the old fingers were just following their habit.

You mean running a firewall? There are plenty available (software and hardware, commercial and free).

Did you have something more specific in mind?

The best firewall is to run a secure OS to begin with. :)

Apart from that... I would not take a Windows-based firewall very seriously. Windows is just too full of security holes.

Any of the BSD's should be fine. Set the system up for minimal or no services, and make it do packet filtering.

DNAunion: Seebs, why do you need a firewall? You said earlier that all you needed to use is Unix - it was really simple.

Yet now you are bringing something completely different into the picture...why? Isn't Unix by itself secure enough to hook up to the Internet? Can't a company just use Linux or "real" Unix on its network and then allow the internet direct access to it?  Or is it, contrary to your original overly-simplistic and useless reply, NOT really that simple?

PS:  No need to answer - those are rhetorical questions that I already know the answers to.

Right, whatever.

For the benefit of the lurkers, one of the reasons you might want a firewall would be if you have a print server. There was a printer daemon exploit in some system once, which was quickly fixed - but the attack resulted in printing ~200+ pages of gibberish if someone tried it on a printer. The solution? Make sure the printer can't get connections from the outside network.

FWIW, most of my Unix systems are just sitting there with full IP connectivity. On the other hand, the Windows machines sit behind a firewall, and play video games.

I use freebsd which is more unix than any verison of linux. And i still get Denial of Service Attacks. If you get a good firewall it will help you but you will still get DoS attacks, and there isn't anything you can do other than get a new ip address.

Well, they're certainly resistant to being the zombies.

Beyond that? Nothing, not firewalls, not Unix, not *anything*, protects against DDOS. That's why it's important to avoid having your computer made into a zombie in the first place.

If the packets are coming over the wire, the wire fills up. It's that easy.

Yeah:

What he said.

Whatever you are doing, a firewall is inexpensive, and discourages amateurs. They can find enough wide open machines to play with that they don't generally bother with trying to crack a firewall.

Pro's are a different story. They will quickly crack the common firewalls. The more popular the firewall the faster they can get through.

BUT, you are unlikely to attract pros unless you are working on something that they are interested in... Like the next killer ap, a BIG video game project, or some other project so big, and so lucrative, that a competitor wants to KNOW about it.

Basically, what I am saying is that a Firewall can't hurt, will almost always help, and almost any one will do unless you think you are working on something that will attract a real pro cracker... in which case, prayer is more valuable than most firewalls ;)

/me reminds DNA to keep it civil :)

Even commercial sites like Yahoo and Egghead have been hacked more or less.

But I don't think a personal server has as much of a problem as that, and certainly not as much from those really good hackers that CAN hack places like Egghead :)

But firewalls can only help, yeah.... they get REALLY annoying sometimes, if you use the computer for personal use, though ;)
