Absolutely. And a lot of classical music written for secular purposes has a religious context. Giuseppe Verdi composed this soprano and male chorus aria, La Vergine degli Angeli (The Virgin of the Angels,) for his opera La Forza del Destino (The Force of Destiny.) The singer is praying to Mary for protection. It's a very beautiful and dramatic piece.

BTW, Verdi was very private about his own religious beliefs. He was critical of the church, and was not known to attend services. In all likelihood, he was at least a religious skeptic, if not an outright non-believer. Proving that even an atheist can write heavenly music.

it has an agressive dark instrumentation that can be discouraging. Xtian metal bands For Today are a bit better than xtain death metal imo

This does not make any sense. Discouraging to you, perhaps, It´s clearly a matter of opinion. Your personal opinion of something does not make it satanic per definition.

I generally agree with what you're saying here. I think we can listen to and enjoy Secular Music. I know I do. What Christian music have you been listening too, well hey? Personally, enjoy groups that are Seco-Christian like Switchfoot or Flyleaf, U2, etc. And there are a few Christian musical artists out there who are good, but they don't seem to get much airplay. This is one reason I go to Accuradio.com and listen to New Christian Rock for random selections that I won't hear on my local radio stations.

Thanks for your comments!

Satanic stuff is not inherent to death metal. Though it is to black metal.

Being a Lutheran is alot more fun. We don't have these ridiculous rules.

Spotify is awesome, I have listened to a bit of everything. Music, for me, played back on some good speakers or headphones is as close as you get to a spiritual experience without having a burning bush in your living room.

I for one have been encouraged and built up (1 Thess 5:11) by Christian hard music. I'm not the only one. And thus God is glorified. Not every Christian has to like it for others to benefit from it, or for God to be glorified by it.

I suppose people are different. Certain styles of music affect the way I think and feel that isn't necessarily edifying to me.

I generally find the entire popular Christian sub-culture to be inherently problematic. I am a Christian living my life of faith here in the world, as a real person; living out my vocation right here in this saeculum, this present world and time. The secular--that which pertains to our present world--is where we live, believe, and carry our cross.

I absolutely love sacred music, which is also why I tend to dislike contemporary "Christian music". In a lot of cases I simply don't understand its purpose; as a substitute for "normal" music? Why would I need a substitute for normal music? For use in church? Perhaps, but the theological content of so much of it leaves entirely too much to be desired.

I'm not opposed to Christian-produced music, obviously. I still have bands and musicians who are Christian such as Five Iron Frenzy and Switchfoot. I like their music because I find the music legitimately good and interesting, and what's being said to be substantive. In other words I like it for the reasons I like any other piece of music. It wouldn't work in a church context, but as listening I find it both enjoyable and meaningful. But I can also say the same about a lot of music that isn't Christian produced, such as music by Bob Dylan or Rise Against. And sometimes, sometimes I like music just because it's fun. My musical tastes are kind of eclectic, and some might even argue not very refined.

Just recently I started singing the bass in a small ensemble that sings four part Christian chorals in a beautifully sounding church once a week - even though I am not a Christian by any means and I can´t relate to the words that are sung.

Sounds interesting, I'll have to look them up on Spotify. I'm used to Metal being whiter than mayonaise.
Yeah - me too. But there has always been a sliver of harder rock being done by African Americans, at least back to the Chamber Brothers in the late 1960s.

As in African American metal music? Like Black Death or Sound Barrier?
No. The stuff like Mayhem and Gorgoroth. It's one of the few genres out there that isn't just about the musical composition - if it's not Satanic, it's not black metal, even if the musical elements are all in place. There are Christian bands that strip the Satanism out, but they're "white metal" or "unblack metal."
