I suppose this is all mere speculation, but I have heard that sometime (I think when we get new bodies?) God will rename us all another new name that is to be our own unique name by Him. That sounds neat. Where is the scripture for this, and what do you suppose we would be named? Hmm, unique names for the billions of people in heaven, yet not naming two people the same name, yet 26 letters in the alphabet. Hmm...

Well, I've read over it a couple of times, and I don't think that it's being literal. If it were literal, the only one who could ever know that name would be the person to whom it was given. It could be a referrence to the Old Testament in that the names of the 12 tribes were written in precious stones on the ephod that the High Priest wore.

Catholics receive a second name when they are Christened. This is a completely different ritual that has no biblical basis whatsoever. Also, this wouldn't fit the verse because other people know that name besides him, and it wasn't given to him on a stone.

Catholics select and receive a new name when they are "confirmed" and not when they are "christened". Catholics are never "christened", but baptized.

"The custom of giving a new name to the candidate is not obligatory; but it has the sanction of several synodal decrees during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The Fifth Council of Milan, under St. Charles Borromeo, insisted that a candidate whose name was "vile, ridiculous, or quite unbecoming for a Christian" should receive another at Confirmation" (cf. Martène). (The Catholic Encyclopedia, Confirmation)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
But back to your original question...
Isa 62:2
And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name.
I believe in the literal translation of the Bible, and therefore, God's Word tells me that I will receive a new name in glory.... a name that God personally selects for me.
God is a personal god... Just as He knows the number of hairs on my head, He has selected a new name just for me that I won't be sharing with anyone else.
I don't believe that catholics are baptized, but rather sprinkled which is not what we are commanded according to the New Testament. You may however be correct on when they receive their new names. I'm not all that familiar with catholic rituals because they aren't Biblical.
I also believe in the Bible - but there are passages that are figurative and passages that are literal. To take everything in the Bible literally would be to incorrectly interpret it.
I also believe that the passage that you have quoted from Isaiah has already been taken care of. When you become a child of God you are given a new name that was provided by the mouth of the Lord: Christian.
The passage that we are discussing is from Revelation, which is a book of signs, and through my reading I am not yet convinced that it is other than another one of those figurative passages.
Is 62:2 And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy
glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD
shall name.
Is.56:5 Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a
place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an
everlasting name, that shall not be cut off.
Revelation 2:17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith
unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
Revelation 3:12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God (because we are His children and take on the name of our Father), and the name of the city of my God (because we are citizens, and called by the the name of our home/residence???not sure on this), which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name(because we are the BRIDE and take the name of our husband, Christ).
Sounds to me that the new name will be personal. I also read that receiving a white stone with a new name was an old Middle Eastern custom for forgiveness.
Your current name was given to you by your human parents based on the way it sounded or some pleasant association. It really didn't have anything to do with your attributes, character or accomplishments.
Your new name will be given to you by God, who sees and knows everything, based on who you are as a person and what you mean to Him.
As for the twenty-six letters in the alphabet, how do you know your name will be in English? Might it be in some heavenly language with more letters in its alphabet?
I think that one of the problems that may be causing misunderstanding and confusion is that the things that are written in Revelation have already come to pass and is a letter written in signs, in my belief. As witness to that affect, I offer the first three verses of the letter:
Revelation 1:1-3 ASV
The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show unto his servants, even the things which must shortly come to pass: and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John; (2) who bare witness of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, even of all things that he saw. (3) Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of the prophecy, and keep the things that are written therein: for the time is at hand.
The language in this passage is very clear about this being in signs(signified here means to "sign-ify") and something that will happen very shortly. As far as the verses that people have listed from the OT, all of that has been fulfilled already, for this is what Christ came to do.
Matthew 5:17 ASV
Think not that I came to destroy the law or the prophets: I came not to destroy, but to fulfil.
I have never heard of this before but it sounds very cool!
Do you have any links to where I can read more??
Yes, I just learned that we will receive a new name when we have our new bodies. Signifiying our new relationship to the Lord.
It makes total sense....why?
Look at Abram and Sari before they entered the covenant relationship with the Lord. They had new names after the covenant relationship was established with the Lord given by him.
It makes sense. I am looking forward to a new name. I wonder what it will be, hmmmmm??????
