Second-chance Purgatory?

Of old, You created me from nothing and honored me with Your divine image. But when I disobeyed Your commandment, You returned me to the earth from which I was taken. Lead me back again to Your likeness, so that the ancient beauty may be refashioned.

Hello, I've never been on one of these forums before but have to hear some other opinions on this. I was raised to believe that if you do not accept Jesus into your heart, you go to hell... period. Well the other night this topic somehow came up with my boyfriend and he does not feel the same way (he grew up Christian as well). He believes that people across the world who did not grow up in a Christian society and who were raised by their families to believe a different religion, will not automatically go to hell, but instead go to some sort of purgatory where God will give them a second chance. He doesn't believe that God would condemn someone to hell for believing in the religion their parents taught them to. I'm not sure of anything like this being referenced in the Bible and am feeling very conflicted now. Thoughts?

with what the Bible teaches.

Careful one of the worst things that can happen to a Christian is to be unequally yoked.

But if it were true, it requires a lot of work on the part of the living to intercede for them.

Offering a prayer for the souls in Purgatory is a pretty low-effort endeavor.

Why do people pray more for the sanctification of the dead than of the living? Had they prayed more for this person while he was still alive, he could have avoided purgatory (if it were true).

Why not pray for both the souls on Earth and the souls in Purgatory? It's not an either/or proposition.
