  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

"The average temperature on Venus is 864 degrees Fahrenheit (462 degrees Celsius)." This is hot enough to melt lead.

Mars is more borderline. "Differing in situ values have been reported for the average temperature on Mars, with a common value being −63 °C (210 K; −81 °F). Surface temperatures may reach a high of about 20 °C (293 K; 68 °F) at noon, at the equator, and a low of about −153 °C (120 K; −243 °F) at the poles."

That average temperature is quite a bit below the lower limit for earth extremophiles. Although summers at the equator at noon are room temperature, I don't know that the equator would be warm enough all year round.

I think a bigger problem would be the lack of available water in both places.

well there is some suggestion that microbes could survive under the surface where would be mildly warmer.

no, your point was that some how angle over rides the amount from being closer as if it should be more from sun, the angle changes the amount of rays your getting from the sun.
but it does ! Go get a flashlight. Shine at the wall so that the spot is circular. Now tilt the flashlight ( only cuz you can’t tilt the wall and waiting for an earthquake takes too long) ;) . The spot is now an oval shape. You have the same amount of light/heat energy hitting a larger area . If you get a ball , draw an equator then look at the size and shape of your spot on the ball . It will be circular only at the equator.
Here comes the good part! add that 23 degree tilt . Then you’ll figure out why we have 4 seasons in the temperate zones

Yeah. I was aware some microbes had been found in extreme conditions. I was wondering more if there has been exploratory work into identifying what might allow life to live in extreme conditions. I'm not impressed when people find something that already exists and then "explain" why its possible.

I'm no expert. But as I recall, cryophilic organisms (living at low temps) are bacteria and some algae and fungi. They've evolved unique lipids in their cell membranes which resist stiffening at low temperatures. And they have proteins in their cytoplasm that prevent ice crystals from forming. I'm sure you can find more detail with an internet search.

but you do understand why the northern hemisphere is hot during the summer even though the earth is further from the sun at that time? If you don’t, it’s because of the same amount of energy spread over a larger area in winter than in summer added to shorter days leading to winter and longer days leading to summer. In the temperate zones this causes 4 seasons

to add to my previous post, from the fall equinox the days get shorter . The shortest day is the first day of winter around Dec 22 in the northern hemisphere .the days get longer from then on . It takes until around March or April for the earth to warm up enough to have most plants start to leaf out . In NYC ( which is about 40degrees North latitude) the last day that it’s possible to have a killing frost is actually June 15 which is less than 10 days before the start of summer. . It takes that long for the earth to warm up on a seasonal basis.

The problem with global warming is that laymen don’t see the earth’s excruciatingly slow , gradual warming over many decades . Atmosphere Scientists see it because they study it. Biologists see it because they see the effects it has on plants, fungi, animals ( including humans) and microbes. Global warming naysayers are mainly in denial or they’re ignorant.

The science behind greenhouse gasses leading to global warming has been known since 1868 at least. A while ago, I posted a picture of a Scientific American from 1868 with the relevant info retyped in a larger font. I’ll see if I can find it

The last sentence was cut off sorry

Paraphrasing the Victorian English because some people really can’t read it. . If you add CO2 to the atmosphere it could prevent the heat from escaping from the earth and this will raise the temperature
