• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Yes...Me! I went through it for 8yrs before getting the right help. I, too thought I was the only one with these thoughts.

Have you been diagnosed with ocd? You need a good psychiatrist.

Always remember that Jesus is stronger than any, old ocd thought (even doubt thoughts :)), and He knows what you need to do to get better. Jesus loves you and wants nothing more than for you to be saved. Those are His promises.

Try and remember that these thoughts are just the ocd...not really you.

I've had ocd for as long as I can remember. I have been dealing with a heavy bout of scrupulosity related to "the unpardonable sin" for the past 7 months. One important thing I learned tonight from my pastor is that our emotions are not an accurate lense with which to view our relationship with God. As Christians, we are in Christ and blameless before God. That might not be something we can fully fathom (with or without ocd), but it's true. Truth can get distorted when our emotions are "off" as a result of ocd, depression, anxiety, anger, etc. John even writes of how our emotions are so inconsequential when it comes to God's amazing authority and knowledge of our hearts and soul (1 John 3:20) - For if our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hears and knows all things."

You are not alone. Hang in there. Know God's truth is greater than your thoughts.

I have it. I've had it for going on 12 years. Until recently I thought I was alone and wanted to kill myself. I'm getting better now, though I'm still having a lot of struggles. Btw, how many of you can now look back and see that you had OCD before you became Christian? I can.

I've been a christian my whole life...but I can remember back to about age 11 or 12, when my ocd started in several different forms.

I'm glad you are starting to do better. May the Light of Jesus give you a calm about your ocd thoughts.

Today is the first day of a 5 day weekend I decided to take several weeks back. Unfortunately, I have a hard time with time off; it is tough because my wife and I always want to spend more time together, but it seems that my ocd really kicks into high gear when I have a 'break' from the routine.

This morning I found my thoughts just running away from me - angry, blasphemous, unspeakable thoughts that just burned away in my head. These thoughts really grieved me, but one "positive" was that I did not question my salvation, at least to the point that I did before. Before my thoughts got away from me, I had re-read the book of Ephesians, the most encouraging epistle for me. This was helpful reassurance, particularly as it states when we first believed the gospel, we Christians are "sealed with the Holy Spirit of Promise."

I survived the day and feel better, so I suppose it is a victory. It was a reminder that ocd is a chronic condition with good days and bad days. I could not pray "effectively" (that is without the ocd thoughts) today. The only thing I could do was to just trust Jesus' promises in the gospel and realize I belong to Him, regardless of what my brain / emotions tell me. What else can any of us do when ocd is spiking? What else can any other human do, but trust the Lord that grace is given, not earned? Therefore, these thoughts are untrue and do not break His covenant.

God bless, and thanks for reading. Marc

Hi Marc,
I think you did exactly the right thing and I'm glad you felt better at the end of the day. Yes, it was a victory that you didn't question your salvation as much as usual. I'm sure it will pay off and reduce the frequency of the spikes. I don't know what else there is to be done when we have spikes. I have lost count of the number of holidays that I have spent OCD-ing in the past. Just know that it will pass. In the meantime, relax and have a great weekend with your wife!

Our prayers are always effective. When the ocd thoughts are really bad, and prayer is very difficult, the Holy Spirit prays for us...with deep groanings...the bible says.
Jesus loves you very much, and since He is God, He understands ocd! Praise be to Him.

Thank you, Seajoy! Great point about the Holy Spirit's intercession, "for we do not know how to pray as we ought." Romans Ch 8 is like the pinnacle of the epistles. A must read or re-read for us all....

Feeling better today. Same thoughts, just better equipped, thanks to God's mercy. Marc

I'm having this problem too right now and I'm really upset and scared

I've had this problem for years and have been doing good but about a week ago I hit an all time low

pjc23565 - please update on how you are doing with this, it'd be great to hear about how other people deal with it. I'm so scared that God is going to end the world when I am having an attack or "trip" as I like to call it, and that I'll be screwed.

God bless you!

Our salvation is not dependent on how we feel or what we think about on a given day.

God's grace is sufficient even on our bad days. Jesus died for us...His Power is greater than any ocd thought.

Rest easy in Jesus Arms...He understands ocd. Your salvation is not your own doing, Praise Jesus!

"Its OK" God knows you better than you know yourself:holy: He will never let you go. :groupray:

When my daughter was having a really hard time with thoughts like yours my husband gave a word picture that really helped her.

He explained when a person has a tummy upset they are sick and all of the yucky stuff in your tummy spews out. When our brain is sick much the same happens and a whole lot of yucky stuff can come out.

If you are interested I have replied to Still Wondering about some research I did. Sometimes understanding why we suffer helps

I too have scrupolosity (sp?) and OCD traits although I've never been officially diagnosed with it. I struggle on a daily basis. Does anyone have any tips on how to pray without feeling like you have to say certian words and/or phrases. Like, I feel that if I don't mention certain people in my prayers than something bad will happen to them and/or me b/c I didn't pray for them. Intellectually, I know/believe God will and is taking care of us, but my emotions (guilt, anxiety) tend to when me over more so than not. It really sucks. Plus, really bad thoughts pop into my mind and that really worries me at times. I know this is a trait of OCD. Does anyone have any suggestions w/o going to a counsellor/MD?

Thanks and God Bless

(Hebrews 4:15-16) For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Jesus truly understands us. He calls himself
Son of Man many times in Bible. Also, He loves us and is willing to help us.

If the people from this forum has sympathy, understanding and love for each other, how can our Saviour Lord have no
sympathy, understanding and love for us? God has much more love and understanding and mercy than any single man can have. How can our love compare to His love? God is love.

In many cases, fear of God's wrath and uncertainty of salvation is the cause of our OCD. We have to be sure that God has no more wrath on us who accepts Jesus as our Saviour. Jesus died for us for our sins. We will not die again. (Jeremiah 31:34
) "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more." This is God's word, we should worry no more. His salvation is enough and complete for anyone.

God bless,

Roger

Have I ever suffered with doubt, unbelief, unreality?!! It has been just as distressing and fear-making as the blasphemous and evil thoughts. One thing that has really helped me is reading books about why we can know that Jesus Christ was a historical figure, why we can trust the Bible, how it came about etc. A good one is Evidence that Demands a Verdict (am reading updated version). Also, The New Testament Documents - Are They Reliable? by F. F. Bruce There are lots of other similar books.
One conclusion that I have come to is that such a huge number of people who testify/testified to having seen Jesus and/or spoken to Him are unlikely to be wrong. I believe them.
Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. We can have faith that B is so, because of A. For example, I have always struggled with the idea of spirit beings. Demons, angels, our own spirits. Because I can't see them. However I have faith that they exist because the evidence overwhelmingly demonstrates that they are, e.g. people have seen them, spoken to them, experienced their activities etc.
You can build a case for Jesus in your mind. Gather the evidence.
Hope that helps.
