Scriptures in Latin

I have been learning Latin through Duolingo and various books from Amazon. Does anyone else read the Bible in Latin or find value in knowing Latin in order to read some of the older documents, as well as official documents from the CC? Can anyone offer any recommendations on learning on one's own?

People put a lot of emphasis on Latin. I prefer English as the modern Bibles have been written with a lot more knowledge and understanding of the old Greek or Hebrew etc.

Have you been enjoying all the angry parrots in the Duolingo Latin course?

If you're specifically looking for resources on learning Medieval Latin, I can't really help you, since I was classically trained, but a very famous classical Latin course is Orberg's Lingua Latina, which is basically a series of books written in Latin, beginning with very simple text and then escalating, with all of the grammar explanations also written in Latin. Highly recommended, since one difficulty with classical languages is not developing proper reading skills.

The textbook I used in college was Wheelock's Latin, which is great for grammar but doesn't really prepare you for reading actual texts in Latin.

As for the Vulgate, I haven't tried to read it (I'm primarily a Greek student these days, so I've been working on the Koine instead), but I imagine that it would be pretty valuable. It's also supposed to be fairly simple Latin, which is always a plus.

There are many texts from the early church that are in Latin, not just the Bible. These texts have Latin as the original language. Also, I speak and read English already, so this is to add to my skill set. I lean towards Latin as the alphabet is basically the same, unlike Greek and Hebrew.

Have fun with it! Actually, I should let you know that there are vocabulary courses for it over on Memrise (here is one) that can be a valuable support, since the book itself provides no translations for anything.
