  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I was just wondering if anyone might be able to help me to find a verse that basically says 'Be in the world, but not of the world'.

I remember reading it several years ago, but at the moment I just cannot find it back. All that I really remember about the verse is that it went something like that and I would definitely like to be able to find it back again.

If anyone might happen to know what I am talking about and can help me find what I am looking for then I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm also looking for stuff that relates to how God views hypocrisy and poor morals and values and things relating to how he really expects us to be both in and out of church.

I'm just curious about all this stuff because I have been attempting to get into and be more active at the church that I go to but unfortunately all that I have seen both in church and out on the world are a lot of lies.

In my opinion the world has basically gone to heck in a handbasket as no one really seems to care about one another anymore for any reason. I kind of became interested in this concept because I have been studying stuff like seduction and attraction as well as things like gender differences and other related topics and the pastor of the church that I have been going to has a tendency to talk about topics like that in his sermons.

HI rdonavan1 , helpful Deba ,

James 4:4 (New American Standard Bible)

4You (A)adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with

(B)the world is (C)hostility toward God?

(D)Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

there is a few that are close to your request but not exactly worded the same
1 John 2
Do Not Love the World

15Do not love (AO)the world nor the things in the world

(AP)If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16For all that is in the world, (AQ)the lust of the flesh and

(AR)the lust of the eyes and (AS)the boastful pride of life,

is not from the Father, but is from the world.
17(AT)The world is passing away, and also its lusts;

but the one who (AU)does the will of God lives forever.
18Children, (AV)it is the last hour; and just as you heard that

(AW)antichrist is coming, (AX)even now many antichrists have appeared

; from this we know that it is the last hour.

19(AY)They went out from us, but they were not really of us;

for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us;

but they went out, (AZ)so that it would be shown that they all are not of us.

Romans 12:2

2And do not (A)be conformed to (B)this world,

but be transformed by the (C)renewing of your mind,
so that you may (D)prove what the will of God is,

that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

James 1:27

27Pure and undefiled religion (A)in the sight of our God and Father is this:

to (B)visit (C)orphans and widows in their distress,

and to keep oneself unstained by (D)the world.

Jesus warns us not to go to the desert to find Him ,

this being the dry places of worship namely churches using His name and serve in name only

nor inner secret chambers ,greek 50009
tameion
this being within you
1) a storage chamber, storeroom
2) a chamber esp. an inner chamber
3) a secret room
for me this is when many decieve us thinking we look for Him inside of us ,
but than when will His Spirit come and dwell with us if we are looking for Him ?

but He comes in the clouds/witnesses when least expecting Him ...

the false christs /annointed are very deceptive and Jesus warns us so much that it can be frightning ,

we trust the Lord only He is our help and protection ...

Mat 24:24For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets,

and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if [it were] possible,

they shall deceive the very elect.

Mat 24:25 Behold, I have told you before.

Mat 24:26Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold,

he is in the desert; go not forth:

behold, [he is] in the secret chambers; believe [it] not.

Mat 24:27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east,

and shineth even unto the west;

so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

we look to Him, not for him in someplace !

hope this helps you some .
peace C .

I was just wondering if anyone might be able to help me to find a verse that basically says 'Be in the world, but not of the world'.

I think this is one of those paraphrases which has its roots in scripture ...

John 8:23 He said to them, “You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world".

Rom. 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world,

... but which is actually not scriptural.

Perhaps you are wearing the wrong set of glasses.

I can find much wrong with the church - but that is our human nature. You will therefore never find the perfect church.

In my opinion the world has basically gone to heck in a handbasket as no one really seems to care about one another anymore for any reason.

Note your use of the word seems. Certainly we are in danger of being overwhelmed with what goes on around us but it is perhaps necessary to keep our eye on the ball and not on the periphery - it is easy to be distracted.

I kind of became interested in this concept because I have been studying stuff like seduction and attraction as well as things like gender differences and other related topics and the pastor of the church that I have been going to has a tendency to talk about topics like that in his sermons.

It is perhaps the case that your pastor is still anchored in a dualist mindset. The Jews in the time of Jesus ably illustrated the inherent danger in adopting a similar mindset - it was easier to divide the world up into 'us' and 'them' - into Jews (good) and Gentiles (bad). Jesus demonstrated that such simply dualistic thinking obscures the real message of the Kingdom which is a Kingdom open to all who thirst.

I have a feeling you are thirsty - you are asking too many questions with which your pastor, if not your place of worship, do not feel comfortable. I hasten to add I am not suggesting your pastor or communion are somehow 'bad' but that it is perhaps time for you need to find another fountain from which to drink. I know this is a difficult time for you and there are no ready solutions - you have to nut through it yourself.

This is a lonely time - I have been through this experience - the wilderness, and I know many others have also experienced those times when there seems there is no fountain from which to drink. Back in those days there was nowhere to turn - it was a desolate time. But at least you have the internet where you can ask your questions without fear of being placed on a guilt trip.

You will get many responses to your questions which is beneficial - you will be exposed to more that one side.

But seriously less profitable

Seems like most people want to believe in lies than the truth. I've run into that quite a lot and it is a lot like blaming the passengers and crew of the World Trade Center hijackings for not being more proactive before the terrorists even came on board the plane.

Instead of admiting the truth and taking responsibility for their own actions all people want to do is judge people and play the blame game. That applies to both so called christians and non christians alike.

What the Bible says is completely irrelevant nowdays as most people just don't seem to want to hear what it says or even follow anything that it says. As far as they are concerned they are right and the Bible is wrong.

Perhaps you are practicing the same irresponsibility.

But I am obviously missing something - I thought you were trying to track down a particular piece of scripture.
