• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I've been struggling quite a bit recently, and yesterday I finally broke down and confided in a friend, and, with her encouragement, my husband. Both encouraged me to read the Bible and pray when I am in a bad spot, which I am very bad about, I have to admit. So, while my husband was studying today, I pulled out my Bible and realized that I don't know what to read when I'm struggling.

So, my question is, what Scripture do you go to when you're struggling? What encourages you?

I have so many, hope these are helpful :)

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4

if indeed we share in His sufferings in order that we many also share in His glory. Romans 8:17

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through His who loved us. Romans 8:37

even thought I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
your rod and your staff they comfort me.
psalm 23:4

Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.
Psalm 55:22 [msg]

I can do everything through him who gives me strength.
Philippians 4:13

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."
Deuteronomy 31:6

"I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten." Joel 2:25

"Never will I leave you; Never will I forsake you." Hebrews 13:5

"because He Himself suffered when he was tempter, He is able to help those who are being tempted." Hebrews 2:18

"Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. and hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts by that Hold Spirit, whom He has given us." Romans 5:3-5

"who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows." 2 Corinthians 1:4-5

"No temptation has sized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it." 1 Corinthians 10:13

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
Matthew 11:28-30

"so if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." John 8:36

My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 corinthians 12:9

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes on what is unseen. For what is seen in temporary but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

psalm 121

Try the whole Psalm 19; and Ephesians 6 10-20. The first is about God rescuing you from your enemies because he delights in you, and the part from Ephesians is about the "armor of God" that guards you against Satan and suffering. Also, in Mark 5, Jesus helps a person who self-injures- it's the story about the man who walked about in the graveyard crying and "cutting himself with stones."

Psalm 55:22 Pile your troubles on God's shoulders, he'll carry your load, he'll help you out. He'll never let good people topple into ruin.

Psalm 9:9 The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.

Nahum 1:7 The Lord is good. He protects those who trust him in times of trouble.

Psalm56:8 You've kept track of my every toss and turn through the sleepless nights, Each tear entered in your ledger, each ache written in your book.

I would seriously recommend getting the book "Cut" by Nancy Alcorn of Mercy Ministries. That book changed my life!
Here is some great scripture from it:

*Psalm 139:13-16 = God created you and your body for a unique purpose, He doesn't want you to hurt/destroy it

*1 Corinthians 6:19-20 =Honor God with your body

* 1 Corinthians 10:13 = God always provides you with an escape from temptation

* Psalm 61:2 = when you feel so weak and far away, and need help

* Philippians 4:13 = ask God to give you the strength that comes from Christ

* Psalm 107:20 = God healed you and saved you from destruction

This is literally like only 4 pages worth from the book! It's packed cover to cover with scripture and inspiration for healing from self-injury, and speaking truth over those thoughts and temptations!
