Opus Dei has been accused of being very controlling and being cult-like. It's also been said that while it's voluntary to join and leave, leaving is made very difficult. http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=93081&page=1
(also, do what I did and google "Opus Dei controversies")

The book/movie The DaVinci Code didn't do the group any favors either.
I did google it. Just wanted to know what Catholics in my inner circle thought.

Honestly, I had only ever heard of the name before yesterday.

Thank you by the way.

Ooops, sorry about that. I could only give you what I gave you (the accusations), but I'm not educated enough about Opus Dei to come to my own conclusion. I haven't done my homework yet. :)

If you google anything + "controversies" you will get all the negative. I did research from all sides. There are people who propegate the bad about nearly everything. Research is always good.
ABC News is not the best source for anything Catholic.
As for that movie, to the contrary, many members and some press think it showed Opus Dei in a positive light. Inquiries spiked up right after the movie.
The more research I do, the more normal and devoted Opus Dei members look.
The Church approves and its founder was canonized. That's a good sign.

I know... But I did it to show why Opus Dei is seen as controversial. Just because I showed what they are accused of doesn't mean they're guilty of the accusations. And, didn't I admit that I couldn't make a judgement since I haven't done my homework on this yet?

As to my choice to use the ABCnews link, I did it because that was the cleanest link I could quickly find. The rest of the pages looked like a kindergartner coded them, making them just about unreadable. That was my only reason for using that one. I thought that gave the one I was answering a good start about why Opus Dei was seen as suspect by some.

As to DaVince Code/Opus Dei, I think that's a matter of perspective. Inquiries indeed may have gone up, but the result of those inquiries might not have resulted in good standing amongst the populace in general, not just among Catholics.

I just find it interesting that you admit you haven't done homework, but the only suggestion for others to get information, was a negative one.

I did it because he asked, "Is Opus Dei a negative connotation on a good Catholic? Curiosity of an outsider." Someone else in the thread previously admitted that Opus Dei has/had a reputation, and when said like that, it implies a negative. I showed where some of the surprise about Scott Hahn was an Opus Dei member might be coming from, since he asked.

Edit: Ooops! That someone who admitted that Opus Dei has a reputation was you. He asked about the negative connotation after your comments.

Didn't know he was a member of Opus Judei? That's odd? However, is there any particular reason that you'd mentioned this? Is he promoting it? Is there some issue that is going on here?
