I was born in the old Simpson memorial (which is now no more) and was raised down Gorgie way, round the corner from Tynecastle (bring back Robbo!!). I studied in Edinburgh too and lived in several flats around Polwarth, Fountainbridge, Marchmont and Slateford Road. Aaah Auld Reekie!

do people in Scotland still wear Kilts? if so, I just might have to move north of the border our ancestors moved down from Scotland a generation or two ago and I had to wear one for my uncles wedding. and, fyi, it was rather fetching - even if I do say so myself

you see the occasional male wandering around glasgow or edinburgh wearing a kilt, i know its a popular wedding/ stag night attire and of course bagpipers

Tend to be for special occasions among lowlanders, but it is not uncommon to see them worn by some highlanders on a more routine basis. Great garment for attracting female attention

Kilts are kinda fashinable now up here. I see quite a lot of young guys wearing kilts, boots and a top just out and about. As long as it's not leather or some 'fashionable' colour it looks quite cool. Worn at weddings, dances, parties, chrismas parties, football and rugby games. I think the guys love the female attention so much they'll wear it anywhere!

Living as I did a good chunk of my life in the Highlands, I can confidently say that you don't see the kilt worn any more up there than you do in the lowlands. Those you do see are just as likely to be english gentry up for some shooting/fishing as they are to be a local.

Amongst those not use to it yes, that would also include foreign tourists. I can remember walking through the Bruntsfield links to collect my date for the Sports Union ball when I was at uni and being stopped by some japanese tourists so they could get a group picture of me in my kilt with all of them!! Crazy tourists.

I remember getting out a rubber dighy on Iona with a set of Council Road Workers oilskins (complete with knee length coat and so'wester, stolen from Stirling County Council by my Grandfather in the 60s) to clattering of shutters and a chorus of 'Gee honey look, a real Scotch Fisherman!' Crazy tourists.

I got a kilt for my 18th birthday, and it is great. I never have to worry about what to wear to any kind of formal occasion. It did me through Uni, graduation, my wedding, all my friends weddings, (so far) and unless I continue putting on weight at the prodigious rate that I have been while married, (9 1/2 stone the day before I was married 12 1/2 the day after), I think I will be buried in it too!

True, highland dress does fair stir the blood.

I have an american chum who's very involved in the Society for Creative Anachronism. He likes the scottish attire, but, worryingly has developed an interest in the hideous creation that is a Utilikilt. For true horror, however, you can't beat the Neokilt.

Neokilts and the ilk are just playing dress up, an activity I reserve for masque balls, Star Wars conventions and other wholesome activities.
