Idols seem to be rampant in Catholicism though ..
When looking at my own spiritual journey thru the years, it's the Catholic saints and mystics that I have learned so much from. For this person, they have been important teachers and where I often find spiritual truth that has been valuable to me.

So do you believe what you believe in spite of Catholicism, or with respect to it?

Would the Pope agree with what you believe?

I think the point, from a scientist's viewpoint, is that 'the Shroud' and all it conjures up, becomes one of those ancient weapons (or Jedi mind tricks). It, and its other various incantations, might work for some folk, but won't work on scientific thinkers researching the origins of life and Earth's geology .. (the latter of which, apparently carry red lightsabres).

I don't care at all what the Pope or even what Catholicism says. I"m not a believer of Christianity in any of it's forms.

Some belief in some shroud doesn't produce any consequence for anyone really.

Really?

How many man-hours did academia invest in analyzing this thing?

Interesting!
Might be considered as being self-inflicted cruel and unusual punishment for him to involve himself around these parts in discussing the shroud topic, though(?) :)
Recall the astrophysicist Brian Koberlein whose involvement on this site was the threat of legal action due to the posting activity of one particular individual.
Brian has written how he receives death threats from fundamentalists, I wonder if the frequency has increased given the US is now run as an Idiocracy.

That must be before I joined. What happened?

Yes .. Its also now virtually impossible to predict which research areas will be on the receiving end of either private or public funding at the moment (because of the latter). The dichotomy in thinking between someone who thinks he's Tony Stark (Pres. Musk) and Trump, resolving funding/research priorities which threaten religious views and what @AV1611VET calls 'academia' (mainstream science), is a complete 'blank'.
It seems to be a real toss up now.

I can't go into specific details but there was an orchestrated campaign to smear Koberlein's professional reputation which went beyond the run of the mill ad hom attacks one usually finds in web forums.
The poster in question felt slighted because he was ejected from a forum run by Koberlein.

Brian Koberlein is a science communicator which probably puts him in the crosshairs of anti-intellectualism more than ever given the political climate that now exists.

I assume that the poster is no longer in the forum?

Coming back onto the abiogenesis/autocatalysis topic briefly, I found this very interesting Youtube which features another of these Santa Fe Institute scientists talking with DeGrasse Tyson:
Neil & Sara Imari Walker Discuss New Theories on The Origins of Life in the Universe
(Unfortunately, its about an hour long (mainly because of DeGrasse's self-publicizing grandstanding which slows her down too much, IMO) .. however, its well worth a look.

Her name is Sara Imari Walker. She has an impressive resume leading up to Asotrobiology from a Physicists' perspective. She's also just published a book last year called: Life As No One Knows It: The Physics of Life's Emergence
It covers most of the ground in the information/combinatorial research going on in the Abiognesis (OOL) space and goes beyond that also. I think I'm tempted to view their Assembly theory (an hypothesis) as pretty much the theoretical bleeding edge behind scientific OOL research.

Oh and just a quick heads-up for @Bradskii: she has a definte leaning away from hard Deterministic Universe .. for many sound reasons. ;) {ETA: Ha! I mistinterpreted what she said at the beginning of the second Youtube (link below). She goes into it at 2:40:40 onwards, ie: right at the end in the section on Free Will}.
She also delves into the idea of the mind being included in Physics theories going forward also, (which I think as being a useful step forwards).
She also goes into it all in way more detail in this Youtube, which is mainly for us OOL binger-types, as its almost 3 hours long .. I'm half way thru it at the moment. Its fascinating and pretty much 'out there' (which is her job to do that, I might add).
