  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I had a question that sort of falls in line with this one, so rather than start a new thread, I thought (if it's okay?), I'd tag my question on with the original posted question:

I've heard similar arguments like this in which the Christians stated that knowledge was wicked and brought to us via Satan to confound the believers. Many of them citing dinosaur fossils as being "planted" by Satan to confuse Christians..?

For any of you who do feel that science threatens faith/religion, do you feel this way? Do you think that science/knowledge is a vice of Satan to corrupt believers?
No, I do not feel that science threatens the teachings of the Bible at all. And no, I do not think that science or knowledge is a vice from Satan - on the contrary, the Bible supports our growing in knowledge. Here are a few verses that indicate this:
Hosea 4:6 - My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, ...
Luke 11:52 - Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.
Romans 15:14 - And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.
1 Corinthians 12:8 - For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
Colossians 2:3 - In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Knowledge is a good thing, especially when tempered with wisdom.

Here is the thing....The presence of God is the presense of knowledge, joy, beauty, love, (list of things), and truth. When we speak any truth (inherently, I mean the truth is completely true and trustworthy), it is the presence of God. As such, it is should be celebrated joyfully no matter where it is just the same as any act of charity, love, forgiveness, joy, etc. Further, this have things have the chance of being used the wrong way which corrupts what it truly is. For instance, beauty has the chance of become an item of idolatry when a person takes the emotion of beauty to far. Likewise, humans often misuse knowledge. It is the use of knowledge and context of knowledge that we should be aware of of. Test everything; keep the good.

No, actually science is based on philosophical assumptions.

Scientists believe that science provides an accurate understanding of the world. That belief itself can not be tested by the scientific method.

The tools of science can not be proven by science: the laws of logic, the Law of Causality, the reliability of observation, the Principle of Uniformity - none of those can be scientifically experimented on, you have to assume they are true in order to run experiments.
This completely sums up my argument.

Good question - and the answer is absolutely not. Science and knowledge are gifts from God. He encourages us to learn about our planet and universe!

Do you see science as a threat to your faith in God? No
Science is based on proof whereas religion is all about believing and trusting. Does that fact that science has rubbished many of the Bible's claims not make any of you consider that God might not exist? I haven't found that so no.
The Bible was written by uneducated people over 2000years ago, They may not have had access to scientific information but that doesn't make them stupid. They were able to read and write.
any reason and likely story to explain their existence would have been acceptable to them...can we really say that for today with the advances and !!proof!! that science teaches us! Science is science, spiritual things are spiritual things.

The Scientific method is to hypothesise and then test the theory to reach a logical and apparent conclusion. Hence science is not based overall on philisohical assumptions but testible and provable fact. But the principles you you referred to are pretty obvious, and stating they're are philisophical is a ludicrious statement. (no offence to your intellectual capabilities intended (^.^))

I have enjoyed seeing how the sciences align themselves with the scriptures over the years. Science has made many assumptions over the years that have had to be corrected - especially those concerning the properties of light and the number of dimensions men have just started to think about and add to the equation of a uniifying theory of mathematics thta can describe our universe. Archeological finds have proved the scriptures reliable over and over.
So called men of science of the past have displayed narrow minds many times over history, begrudgingly giving up false theories for the true facts as they are revealed by those able to expand their knowledge with new revelations in science. So, IMO there should be know conflict between faith and true science that is open minded to what can and cannot be proven or what is possible, as recent discoveries show that many more dimensions exist, unseen, than men first knew of.

Let us not forget the difference between science and bad science. Bad science is the science of assumptions.

Good science is based upon what we have witnessed. in example we have Evolution that is taught as fact, but in order for something to progress beyond the Theory stage it must be "observed" and since it takes place (allegedly) over millions of years, science cannot have possibly observed such a feat.

Yes it is, That is because there is the Theory of Gravity, and the Law of Gravity. Each is it's own work.

They are not the same.

Many people will use this to try and confuse you, and it works for many, but, this is a play of deception regarding the nature of Theories, Hypothesis, and Laws.

Dear Emz...you have already had some very good answers, so I would just like to reiterate...true science has demonstrated the Bible to not only be true historically (the science of Archeology) and somewhat physically in a prophetic way (stating 1000's of years in advance that the earth was a spere and so forth), but also verifies many other areas of science.

The only "science" that trys to debunk God is evolution, which stems from a false philosophy and a false paradigm. The "Grand Daddy of Evolution" Ernst Mayr has finally admitted (Scientific American, year 2000) that evolutionary science is not biological in nature, but historical - proofed only by "historical narratives" (just-so stories about how evolutionists "think" things happened).

But this is not a board to discuss evolution, so I must stop there.

True science ratifies what Scripture says and is only a threat to religion...true Christianity is NOT a religion (man's ideas about God), it is instructions straight from God Himself on how to have a saving relationship with Him.
"PM" me if you would like more info.

Blessings!

This answer might not suffice with alot of people, but I don't know any other way of saying it.

God created the things that are viewed as scientific facts, so how can something God created disprove Him?

I'm still waiting for these things that science has supposedly debunked about the Bible. Skeptical scientists want people to think that science has disproven the Bible, when it fact, the Bible only strengthens their arguments. Like how the earth to sun to moon's rotation is off so many arc degrees due to the fact God stopped the sun from rising for a day. Strange how that is a scientific, proven fact, and also mentioned in Scripture by supposed uneducated men. Science has done nothing to disprove the Bible...nothing.

My guess is that there is nothing wrong with science. The problem lies in how observations are interpreted. Evolution is simply an interpretation (albeit faulty) of observable phenomenon. Some people have incorrect interpretations of the Bible. It is the nature of men to make mistakes from time to time.

No.

Science has only ever 'rubbished' irrelevent detail and people's misintepretations - it has nothing to say about the important message. Science shows irrefutably that Genesis is not an accurate account of how the world was made, but that's not the message Genesis exists to convey. The important message - why God made the world and what is our place in it are not questions science can ever address.

The Bible was written by uneducated people over 2000years ago, any reason and likely story to explain their existence would have been acceptable to them...
Would it? They accepted a story then that they knew incorporated impossible things like a virgin birth, a talking donkey, people coming back from the dead, and so forth. It doesn't take modern science to know these things are impossible - in fact they are important parts of the story precisely because they are impossible.

Science re-enforces my belief in God. The earth is about 92 million miles from the sun. A few million miles closer or further from the sun and it would be to hot or cold for life on this planet. science agrees. Our moon is about 238 thousand miles from the earth. Again, a few thousand miles closer and the tides would wash us away. A few thousand miles farther and we would have no tides. The oceans would then stagnate and die. science agrees. The air we breathe is about 20% oxygen and 80% nitrogen. less oxygen and we would be gasping for air. More oxygen and we would not be able to put out any fires. Science agrees. The earth is tilted exactly 23 1/2 degrees. This gives us our 4 seasons. The list goes on and on. Coincidence? Accident? No, neither. Only something of this magnitude and perfection and perfect balance in everything could be created by a supreme and divine being. Our God the Father.
