  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Science debate

I was under the impression that the arabs were the primary keepers of knowledge through the dark ages. It seems that the Renaissance followed on the heals of the Crusades - as invaders brought back knowledge of mathematics and science and love of literature and art from the "Holy Land".

What knowledge (except how to read) was really preserved by the church during the dark ages?

There's been a couple of books addressing this question. I think one of them was titled _How the Irish Saved Civilization_; I haven't read that. Some of my sources are from _Christianity on Trial_, by Vincent Carroll, which is an excellent work covering many of the common attacks on Christianity; it's a bit biased, I assume, but the case is well-argued with good citations.

The works of Plato survived in Europe. Aristotle came from the Arabs.
