  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm working on completing the IGETC, (a transfer thing in california) and I just need one more science class. It needs to be under the Physical Sciences catagory, with a lab. I'm going to choose between astronomy, chemistry, and geography. But I'm not sure which to choose... what do you think? What are the pros and cons of some of these classes from your experience or what you think? What sounds easiest? Most interesting? Most useful? and why?

Here's the classes and their descriptions:

ASTR 101: Introduction to Astronomy:
This course introduces students to the field of astronomy, including planetary and stellar evolution, cosmology, and current topics.

CHEM 100: Introduction to Chemistry:
A course on the basic concepts of chemistry. The metric system, solutions, the periodic table, atomic theory and stoichiometry are some of the topics covered.

GEOG 101 and GEOG 104 Physical Geography and lab
GEOG 101:
Physical Geography is the study of the physical environment of the earth's surface and human impact on the environment. A field trip is required.
GEOG 104: Physical Geography Lab
This course focuses on application of the principles of physical geography.

No one science is for everybody, but when I went through the California JC system I found that phsyical geography was the most interesting class. You get to actually learn about things that are all around you. Especially living in California, every time you step outside you see things that you learned about in Physical Geography, and I don't know about you, but that gets me excited!

I've also found the class has been really useful, because now I'm more aware of my environment, and of the dangers of certain environmental things, and how to keep myself safe. For instance, I know how to judge just how safe a given cliff is to walk on, how to best stay safe during earthquakes, what circumstances are likely to trigger things like flooding and landslides, etc.

I guess you could say this kind of class has a lot of practical, every day value. Not to mention you get to play with rocks and a million other fun things in labs.

wow one of each so far

It's ok if you are biased when answering this poll... just as long as you explain why you are biased.

Like I would rather take a history class than any of these... because I'm a history major... so I'm biased as well.

I voted chemistry.
I took an intro chem class because I hadn't had any exposure to chem before (which is a huge part of my major) and it was easy. The lab wasn't much more than gaining familiarity with equipment and the concepts introduced in lecture weren't that hard to comprehend.

I voted for geography because you are a history major and I think you may enjoy the class more than chemistry or astronomy. You could always base you're final choice on the professor by going to ratemyprofessors. Often I find the quality of the professor makes or breaks a class.

yeah... I am going to base it off of the teacher a bit... there's only one geog teacher at my school... actually two... and it basically says on ratemyprofessors that they are terrible.... and they are only on the other campus too... not the mention that from looking at past schedules they are always at the same time as the humanities classes... which I need for my major... so I might not even be able to take geography... but I don't know yet.

I LOVE Chemistry, so that's what I voted for. Like someone above said, it's fun because it explains how everything works. Totally fascinating.

Second, I would go for Geography. It's fun, too.

Astronomy... I haven't much experience in. Considering how much I love the sciences (perhaps odd for a person with an English degree), I'd probably end up liking that, too. I do recall being told there was quite a lot of math involved, and since I have a mild allergy to math, that would deter me a little.

I'm a history major too. Astronomy is a fun class so I voted for that one. I transferred from a community college to a univeristy (where I am now) and had to take Chemistry in order to transfer. I hated that class with a passion, but that's probably because I despise math and Intro Chem is math heavy.
