In fact, there seems to be depressing and predictable theme.
They are basically recycled low-budget, effects-minimal, weakly politically correct disaster movies.
Typical script. Misunderstood, put-upon, unbelieved young female researcher / astronomer sees meteorite. Rejected by complacent middle-aged white protestant ango-saxon male director / general so has to round up sympathetic black male / chinese female to crash secret establishment guarded by thick WASP truncheon-toting guards and miraculously set off (one-chance only) rocket which saves world with minutes to spare.

Apart from the dire scripts (which often involve zombies), does the Western World really have a terminal death wish? Is God speaking a warning to a civilisation that has rejected the gospel of grace in Jesus and never reads the Bible?

When I was in Asia, the idea of films depicting the catastrophic destruction of the capital city would have been regarded as treasonable and neurotic.

Godzilla?

I think people like scenarios involving disaster because they like to identify with the hero who makes it through the adversity and survives. It seems to be universal and not limited to the West.

Thanks for the reply.

The country I was in was an emergent central Asian one. They definitely would not have liked the idea of Bishkek being flattened. It would have been regarded as an afront to the progress of the state, and its ability to prosper its citizens.

But point taken.
