I think I prefer "mildly hardened Space Opera". That is Space Opera with reasonably realistic(or unrealistic but justifiable enough not to worry about) details of science and and sociology. I don't usually like either utopias or dystopias.

The type I prefer would have expansion in space and cultures competing for glory. Much of this would center on the semi-civilized borders. This idea is often called a "Space-Western" which is I think a rather annoying way to put it for two reasons. One is that their are other frontiers besides the American. Another reason is that the Western is America's peculiar contribution to the epic tradition; it is to America what sagas are to Iceland. The term "Space Western" underestimates how it is in fact a theme found in many cultures and now taken into space.

The type of story I envision would vary in intensity between low-key frontier danger, and "great quests". In fact my favorite setting is the Traveller RPG setting which allows for all the things I am desiring. One thing Traveller doesn't do as well at is handling the Mythic style of Space Opera which contains universe shaking events and de facto supernatural events-like Babylon 5 or Dune. Traveller can do that sort of thing, but the Gurps version at least is incompatible with threats to civilization. That problem can be solved by having smaller threats(to one single culture for instance) and doing ones work far away from the Third Imperium. There is still plenty of room; a lot of the best remembered stories from legend were after all about the saving of a single city, or the adventures of one hero.

One plot device I have recently become fascinated with is the "nested story". That is where one tells a story in which someone else tells a story. It has tremendous advantages, among them is that one can temporarily change settings or explore a different part of one's own setting. One can even change genres easily. For instance I recently wrote a sci-fi which had a character telling a story drawn from the folklore of her planet. This allowed me to temporarily switch to fantasy without the awkwardness that might otherwise come.

I keep reading stuff that skirts the line between the two like Gene Wolfe's New Sun and related works (sci fi if I had to choose, but it's tricky especially for Book of the New Sun,) Zelazny's Amber stuff (fantasy, but yeah) Brust's Dragaera stuff (Fantasy, but with a sci-fi outlook and background,) etc.

Really I will go anywhere in speculative fiction. Hard sci-fi, pulp sci-fi with space princesses, high fantasy, low fantasy (sword and sorcery,) horror, historical fiction with some clever fictions, whatever. As long as it fills me with a sense of wonder, or wows me with its action that's good enough.

Only good scifi is Dune imho
I'll grant you that the first three books in the Dune series are among the best sci-fi written.
Still, imo, they are pale reflections compared to the original Lensmen series.

Haven't read the Lensmen. You'll have to enlighten me.

I do love the first four Dune books: Dune, Messiah, Children, God Emperor. Heretics and Chapterhouse weren't my faves but read 'em anyway.

Nowdays, at age 37 with three kids, a wife, and teaching, shoot, I'm lucky to read the newspaper! ^_^

The original series is THE trilogy that created the whole genre known as space opera.
Today it is usually printed as a five book series with the first two being re-writes so that they could be added to the series.

Written by E.E. "Doc" Smith in the late 40's and early 50's, it deals with the formation of the first intersteller, multi species, goverment and the law enforcement agencies required to preserve the peace.
But that is the bare bones outline of the series.

There are alien races, power armour, massive space battles, and concepts that far exceed the period in which the series was written.
As mentioned, currently it is presented as a five book series. But I recommend ignoring the first two books and starting with the third, as it was originally intended. So if you have the time, pick up Galactic Patrol.

If you want a better overview of the series, but their will be spoilers, You might want to look at

Sounds intriguing.

I still maintain the OP should have horror in there. I'm a huge Star Trek, Star Wars, Alien, Blade Runner, Alien Nation, V, Battlestar, sci fi fan. But I'm also a big horror fan. I'm watching the George Romero Dead movies right now. Gotta love 'em! I'm a huge classic horror fan along with being a big fantasy buff (LOTR especially) and love James Bond 007 BIGTIME!
