Lord, I pray for the young boy who did this. I pray that we will see the victim in him, and not just demonize him and condemn him further. He has lived his whole life with judging, condemning, abandonment, fear, hopelessness and powerlessness. He was at the end of his rope and nobody gave him a ladder. Who's to blame? The parents, the grandparents, the teachers, the counsellors, everyone who saw what he was going through and chose to ignore it. Our children need our attention and protection, not just our condemnation when they do something horrible. Amen.

In July 1997, Mr. Weise's father, Daryl Lussier Jr., killed himself in a standoff with the police on the Red Lake reservation, the tribe's home in far northern Minnesota, about 30 miles from Bemidji, the nearest city.

In March 1999, his mother, Joanne, suffered a brain injury when the car she was riding in struck a tractor-trailer on a highway in Minneapolis, Ms. DesJarlait said. The driver, a cousin of his mother, had been drinking and was killed.

After the accident, Ms. DesJarlait said, Mr. Weise, who had lived most of his life in Minneapolis with his mother, was sent back to Red Lake to live with his grandparents. He did not want to go, family members said.

Children of people who commit or repeatedly attempt suicide are far more likely to attempt it themselves.

This young man had the most horrible losses, was sent to live with strangers in a place so poor and remote that he was the only person in town with a computer, and had trouble making friends because he was physically different and older than most of his classmates. He probably felt nothing but desolation and hopelessness.

I don't know if many of you have been on a rez, but they are very poor and very remote. Sometimes you have to drive 40 miles just to see a doctor, or 30 miles to a gas station. They are so remote that many towns on a rez don't even have postal service, you have to drive 20 miles to pick up your mail. Sometimes entire towns don't even have indoor toilets. This rez has a 40% unemployment rate. They are breeding grounds for emotional desolation and hopelessness.

Pray for this entire community.
