  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Scary..

Share some of the scariest moments in your life..

A few of mine..

Being alone in the woods when the sun was setting and hearing a coyote howl not too far in the distance...

Repeatably seeing a toy move on it's own multiple times.

Seeing dead bodies at funerals..

Ok, maybe my life ain't that scary but is yours? Lol..

When I was in Uganda I went to various towns like Jinja, Lira, Gulu, and Kampala and several outlying villages in the bush. The civil war between the government and the Lord's Resistance Army was still happening (mostly in South Sudan though), and there was some unrest in a couple of the places. On at least one occasion we crossed paths with some AK47-wielding individuals, whom I believe were rebels but ultimately nothing came of it.

On the same trip, we were held up on our way to Murchison Falls because a charter bus carrying school children got stuck in the mud. We decided to help dig them out, which took a couple of hours. When we got to the Nile, the last boat across had already left. We called and worked it out and ended up crossing by moonlight in this rickety old thing with a weak motor. We were able to see some crocodiles and hippos popping up around our boat while we crossed because the moonlight was so bright, which got our adrenaline pumping.

A few years before that, a completely different kind of scary, I had a weird spiritual experience after I saw The Village in theaters. Which is weird because the film didn't scare me, and I've seen it a dozen times since with no such experience. I think it might've just been my mind playing tricks on me though, or my over-spiritualizing a coincidental series of rational events.

Trying to learn to swim with goggles when I was a kid.

I swam down into the deep end of the pool (I think it's 10') but suddenly the goggles came loose and water flooded into them and I had no idea where I was. I was stuck in the middle of the water, too far from the ground to push up and not knowing which way was up because I couldn't see. I just swam like crazy until I finally managed to get to the surface, but I was already inhaling water.

My grandpa was sitting right next to the pool but he was sunbathing, and since everything happened underwater he had no idea I was having trouble until I came up.

Watching a patient exhibit all the signs of a heart attack and wondering if she was going to die in my care....she was very scared. To this day, I don't know if she had a heart attack because the lab results weren't made available before I left after my shift...but she was stable, comfortable, and alive. I didn't work for several days and she was gone when I got back. I am not legally allowed to look at her records after she leaves my care so to this day, I don't know.

When I was in high school, I was at my church late at night. My church has a reputation of being haunted. During our annual New Years' Lock-in, we were playing Sardines (opposite of hide-and-seek) and three of us where in a room by ourselves when closed door opened and then preceded to shut.

Not to mention every single night before going to bed back when I had psychotic depression.

My father was left very messed up following his stint in the army. Sometimes he would get drunk and do stupid things, sometimes I would have to lock him outside until he passed out/went back to the pub because those stupid things were dangerous things.

Those times were probably only scary to me because I have little else to compare them to though. So not so scary really.

First day of a backpacking trip with the YMCA and hearing someone screaming for help a few hundred yards away and knowing I was going to be the first help there and there was no real backup.

Trying to find the waterslide from the film South Pacific and having 3 armed men come out of the bush, most likely pot growers. Fortunately I was with a member of a prominent native family and there was enough chance that they were hunting for us to all decide that was the case.

Getting 20 0r 30 feet into the Native Son mine and realizing the unusual twists in the tunnel were because the roof had come down before. Quick exit.

Getting cut off from camp at 2 in the morning because there was just one narrow trail through an overgrown meadow and the bears were rolling out like the tide was more annoying and amusing than scary.

Oh but being in camp and seeing young adults so bear curious that they were close to surrounding some cubs was scary. Very scary.

My mother underwent brain surgery twice. I was terrified of losing her, but I suppose that might qualify more as anxiety.

Having to appear in court in response to truancy charges might qualify as the scariest moment in my life. I am very shy, have a fear of public speaking, and was quite concerned about being ordered to live with my father (my parents are divorced).

Honestly, I was quite the terrified and worried child. I was consistently worried that my mother would be involved in a fatal vehicular accident while I was at my father's house, concerned that someone with murderous intent would break-in our home, anxious about an earthquake or tornado striking and probably many other things. Upon reflection, it seems as if I spent quite a bit of my childhood in a state of worry or fear. Kinda sad.

Once I thought Jesus had returned and I was not ready and it scared me very badly.

Many years ago I was working as a truck mechanic and a Christian friend of mine had been telling me about some song he had heard and that he really liked it.

A little while later me and a different friend were standing there talking about when Jesus was going to return.

About that time my first friend the Christian walked by and turned up the radio and said "This is it".

I started to listen and it was some kind of news reported talking about Jesus had returned and the graves were opening up in Israel.

All of a sudden all my energy left me and I felt like I was going to go to hell right there and I was in this state for a full five minutes think that Jesus was here and I was going to go to hell.

A few minutes later my first friend came by again and asked me how I like that song he was talking about, I was so relieved, it was not the actual coming of Jesus but a song and I had only heard the first few seconds before somebody turned off the radio.

Let me just say I have come a long way since then and I am going to be happy when Jesus returns.

I also understand how the people must have felt as they listened to "WAR OF THE WORLDS" years ago and they thought it was really happening.

I almost got robbed by a tweaker at a gas station one night, and barely managed to get away. I was just a naive college boy from a middle class neighborhood. I've got a concealed pistol license now, and never go out at night, or to a bad neighborhood without my good friends Smith and Wesson.

1) When I was with the scouts as a teenager, we often go camping in the middle of the woods. And at night when I woke up and have to pee...

2) Once I was all alone in my house. I was walking upstairs to sleep. Then I heard this weird growling noise coming from the outside of the house, just on the other side of the wall of the house. It finally screamed and ran off. To this day I have no idea what kind of animal can make that noise.

3) I used to live in an apartment in Asia. On one bright sunny day I looked down and I see this black shadowy figure slowly walking. I am not sure how to describe it but that thing was purely black with no texture or light reflection. It was solid and not transparent. I do not recall seeing a shadow under it feet, even when it was a very sunny day. It was too big to be an animal and it walked on two feet. I saw it for a whole 10+ seconds before it turned the corner and disappeared.

I read that some people call them the "Shadow People". I guess something like this.

http://usercontent2.hubimg.com/8940947_f520.jpg

I feel scared thinking about that memory. That shadow person was nowhere near me (because I was in my apartment), but it is scary to actually see these things. Thank God Jesus is greater than whatever that was!
