The Ring was a fabulous statement about safety within our culture. And a terrifying one as well. LOVED that movie. The boy scared the crap out of me when he revealed the reality of the girl to his mother.
And of course, breaking the third wall is a horrifying image and metaphor.
Videodrome did it well (though it's dated) but, IMNSHO, The Ring did it better. I need to see the original

Jaws is, now, extremely dated (with our photorealistic CGI), but for its time it was GREAT. It literally changed (for a while) how people behaved on the beach and in the ocean.
That's reality-affecting horror.

Alien. Again, by today's standards it might seem dated, but this movie was the PERFECT "haunted house" movie, with Giger and Lovecraft influences to boot.

The Exorcist.........again, a culture altering movie. Not only did it FREAK people out, but it created a short lived religious revival. Apparently movie horror can generate a faith in a specific god.

However............... the ONLY movie to give me nightmares as an adult was SE7EN.
I saw this as soon as it came out on video.
And I had true nightmares (all based on dream-logic based in the movie) for 6 nights.

Then I waited a few days............and rented it again.......

John Doe is far worse than Jason or Michael. He's worse than Freddy, Pinhead (well, maybe not worse than Pinhead)......he's the "crazy religious guy" living next door*.

And the "next door reality" is what scares me in movies.

*Not a dig on Christianity. Im sure all of us, Christian, Atheist, polytheist or otherwise, have all met the "crazy religious guy/gal"

The First half of that remake of The House on Haunted Hill with Geoffrey Rush.
Such a pity that the last half is probably the least scary film ever made.

After some brief thought, I'd have to say 'The Terminator,' or similar films because the basic premise, that machines may turn against humanity, has, in my opinion, the possibility of becoming a reality. Unlike ghosts, or other phenomenon of supernatural origin, I find the idea of something physical, irrefutable, if you will, to be much more horrifying. I think movies like 'Seven,' or 'Saw,' also fit into this category because of their possibility factor, which is strong, because similar crimes have, in fact, been committed (think Jack the Ripper).

I'd have to say The Grudge and Messengers. Those two movies royally creeped me out. I didn't sleep at ALL after I watched The Grudge. It was pathetic. lol

Years ago I told my kids that the movie "The Shining" was very scary. I did not realize that the Simpsons had done a spoof of it.

When they watched the movie they laughed all the way through it, thinking only of the Simpson's spoof. I guess nothing is truly scared anymore.

haha. I read the book first, so I knew what was gonna happen. But it's a great movie...

I don't know what my scariest movie would be. I don't get scared to easy. I know the original "Black Christmas" had the creepiest phone calls. Dead Alive is one of the goriest. A Tale of Two Sisters is one of my favorites.

For me, it will always be Psycho. Mostly because I saw it when it first came out. I was about 8 years old. I think one of my school buddies was having a birthday, and his folks just dropped us off at the theater. No ratings in those days, and they'd let kids in to see almost anything. Was really a pretty violent and disturbing film for a bunch of 2nd graders on their own. Not really a kid's birthday movie. All of us were huddled in our seats, looking down at the floor for most of the film. One of those childhood memories that will last forever...

You say that TCM has bad acting, but you think Saw is awesome so you must think the acting in that is great.

One of the things that makes TCM the greatest slasher horror movie ever is the quality acting.

Lets take an example from each movie.

TCM: A lady is tied up and tortured, when she gets herself loose she throws herself through a window to escape.

SAW: A lady is tied up and tortured, when she gets herself loose she calls her husband and does a "kiss and make up" from the arguement they had earlier that day.
Which allows the bad guy to escape.
