The biggest thing to cut down on trips is just old fashioned planning. Growing up my mother would drive the 5 miles to the grocery store once a week, always on Thursdays. Often a little milk or something was picked up on Sunday when we went to church.

She had a well stocked freezer, pantry and cupboard and if it had been necessary I think we could have normally made it several months before we really started to have troubles putting together meals.

She didn't buy for the next meal, she bought what she used that was on sale.

Ever think of carpooling to go to the grocery store? Easiest way to get that started is to call someone up and ask if there is anything they could use that they'd like you to pick up for them or maybe they'd like to go along?

You could work to have the taxpayers bail you out a bit by building a bike/walking path or at least making the road wide enough that it isn't dangerous to walk along the side.

Most options to fix thing by buying things like electric cars or high mpg cars or scooters and such spend thousands to save hundreds.

You likely drive by most of the places you need on the daily commute most workers make, have a plan to pick things up along the way.

People are amazed if they actually try it, but many can cut down the number of trips to about a quarter of the trips they normally take without much inconvenience, but they have to quit having their life be controlled by the moment and everything is a crises type of life.

I made changes well before gas prices went up as I just HATE driving. I will never again live anywhere where I would have to drive more than 5 miles for anything.

We moved to a town where we can walk everywhere but work and take full advantage of the fact. When we lived on Maui we drove about 300-400 miles per week. Here in southern Illinois we have one more car and combined we drive the 2 cars about 60-70 miles a week. (it helps that my VW gets 50mpg too).

Now we walk to the gym, the mall, the lake, the grocery store, restaurants, and pretty much everything else. It's helped me lose a little weight and I feel so much healthier because of it. Definately one of the best moves I've ever made.
