Before I was 'saved', I was travelling in my 1980s camper van which had no power steering and the brakes were very touchy. I always had to put my foot on the brakes slowly so the back wheels didn't lock up, this meant I would usually have to mentally prepare to stop before an intersection.
Anyway, I was heading into a city, as I was getting closer, the traffic started getting heavier, it wasn't that fast, about 60kmh and there was a young P plater in the next lane who had an older lady in the car, I sensed she was acting overly cautious like she was a new driver and simultaneously, thought popped into my mind to be careful to avoid her.
I ignored the thought and switched lanes to try to get ahead in the traffic, so I was behind the P plater. We were approaching lights at the intersection, and here the rule for a yellow light is to stop, unless you're too close to the line to stop safely. The light turned from green to yellow, just as her car hit the line and she slammed her brakes on. I wasn't right up behind her, but due to knowing my van, I freaked and reacted by slamming the brakes as well (dumb move!) So my back wheels lock and it's like I go slow motion spinning to the right, a full 180 degrees so I ended up facing the opposite way.
Miraculous thing is, if there had of been anyone in the next lane and right behind I would have hit someone in the spin for sure. I was absolutely mortified and everyone had come to a complete stop behind me, with one guy in a 4WD laughing hysterically at me as I did my best to turn my hunk of junk around as fast as I could and high tale it outta there!
Suffice to say, I've never taken a risk near an intersection like that again.
