• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I found this:

The 1983 Code of Canon Law simply states: "The precept of participating in the Mass is satisfied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated anywhere at a Catholic rite either on the holy day or on the evening of the preceding day.

But does the Catechism say anything about this? Does it even mention the Saturday vigil mass? I'm honestly not sure.

So what about when you go to Confession on Saturday? Normally I would just be inclined to stay for the Mass 30 minutes later, but you seem to be saying that I should go home and then come back on Sunday morning?

I figure that if you were to go to Saturday Mass when you only couldn't make Sunday Mass, that would be in the Catechism, which so far I can't find. As far as I know, going to Saturday Mass fulfills your Sunday Obligation.

Is there anything in the Catechism that says you must go to a Sunday mass if possible (i.e. instead of the Saturday one)?

I don't think it's necessarily bad to go to the Saturday mass because you don't want to get up early on Sunday. Some people are not morning people, and they want to be alert and attentive in Church, not dozing off every few minutes.

I go to the 11:30 am Sunday mass for no other reason but than I do not want to get up at 8 am to go to the 9:00 one. This isn't just because of selfishness, but because I do not want to be tired during the Mass, so that I can give it my full attention.

From what I heard from a guy that really knows what he is saying, you should only go on Sat when you ligitemantly can not go on Sunday.

Unless the name of this guy is "Pope John Paul II" I don't buy it. The Saturday evening mass fulfills our Sunday obligation, because for liturgical reasons, the beginning of Sunday is actually 4pm on Saturday.

CCC 2180 The precept of the Church specifies the law of the Lord more precisely: "On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass." "The precept of participating in the Mass is satisfied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the holy day or on the evening of the preceding day."

Yes, self-denial and sacrifice are important, but more important is the grace conferred by the sacraments (notably the Eucharist). We go to Mass, freely, of our own will, to worship the Lord, be it Saturday evening or Sunday morning. I would think that we would rejoice in the fact that people make the effort at all to attend Mass, to celebrate and worship Him, not bellyache about what particular time that community worship is being done.

All time is precious, all time is holy, all time used worshipping the Lord is time well spent, be it Saturday or Sunday. The fact that the Church does not make a distinction between Saturday evening of Sunday morning Mass tells me that both are equally acceptable to the Lord.

Whatever spin individuals want to put on the motives of others who wish to worship at a particular time may work for them, but personally I think they should be more concerned about their own habits rather than worry about the habits of others.

Whenever I feel the temptation to criticize someone about the their dress, behavior, etc at Mass, I just remind myself of this. It saddens me to think about the possiblity that people have been driven from the Church by petty judgement.

Thank you as well...I was really feeling hurt by chelcb and Br. Max's statements -- this isn't the first time I've been told I was doing something wrong w/r to Catholicism, and when people are accusing you of this it's hard to avoid having at least flashes of a "Why even bother?" attitude.

I've got a tough choice ahead of me, Kern. I'm either going to Alabama next Sept. to see the Hogs play or I'm coming down to your neck of the woods to see Arkansas rekindle its rivalry with the 'Horns. If I make it to Austin, we'll hit Mass together...regardless of the day.

nyj: well, since according to the Hebrew calendar, Sunday begins at 6:00PM Saturday, the Vigil mass is Sunday worship. SHHHHH!!! don't tell anyone though ;)

My point is to motivations. Many go to the evening Mass because they cannot be "bothered" with getting up on Sunday morning. This is a dangerous mindset to get into. Sacrifice is central to the faith. :)

I actually attend mass or at least a distribution of the Eucharist every day when it is possible for me to do so.
