  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Yep, I'm asking about Satanism. I was intrigued to discover we have a satanist on the forum. So I'd like to know what exactly you believe...

Who is Satan? Is he the same person as depicted in the Bible (i.e. same personality)? If not, where do you get your knowledge of him?
What are your practices? What does it mean on a day-to-day basis to be a satanist?
Anything else you can tell us?

Out of interest what are those verses that you consider to be in reference to satan?

The ones that in Hebrew say "Ha'Satan"

So, you have the book of Job references, 1 Chronicles 21. Without "Ha" in front of it, satan simply means adversary. Ha makes it "The Satan" or "The Adversary" or "The Accuser".

The guy that posted in your thread about Satanism posted a quote from Anton LaVey, the founder of the Church of Satan.

You can look it up on wikipedia. Anton LaVey's philosophy was, as far as I know, non-theistic. He didn't believe in a god or a devil, and instead used satan as a metaphor/character. I think he believed in magic, though.

Ya I agree as well. From what I saw frm wikipedia, it sounds more anti-christian than anything. Like a mockery of christianity, with hedonistic beliefs. There is no worshipping of the devil, just magic like she said.

I once went to a Satanic website when i was trying to see how different or similar all the religions were. It seems that overall, Satanists seemed to fist in several overly broad aspects.

One aspect was that it is anti-Christians. Some disliked what Christianity preaches or what has been done in the name of Christianity. It is more of a rebellion or counter-culture. Beliefs varied a lot, but it seems the main draw of Satanism was that is opposed Christianity. I think this is the one that get protrayed in horror movies.

Another aspect is the perspective that Satan is more of a good god like Prometheus. He helped out humans and God (like Zeus) punished him for it. God then spins his PR machine to make Satan look bad.

Another aspect emphasized the philosophy that "if you mess with me, I will mess back with you." It was more into retribution and less into forgiveness. Also it was more about individuality and hedonism.

I think it is like any religion in that if someone tells you they are a Satanist, you really know very little about what they really believe until you ask them.

There are different forms of Satanism.

As others have pointed out, the kind that is embraced by the so-called "Church of Satan" is decidedly non-theistic, a hedonistic philosophy that caters to the taste of rebellious youths in their "misunderstood genius"-phase. They don't worship Satan as a literal being, but use the imagery to contrast their own POV with what they perceive to be the evil of Christianity: oppression of the individual, oppression of natural urges and so on and so forth. It's more than a bit straw-manny, but that's how it is.

There are theistic Satanists as well, though. One example would be the Temple of Set, which splintered off of the CoS in the 1970s, if memory serves.
They are theists who've moved beyond the unhealthy focus on Christianity, and worship the deity of radical individualism in what they believe to be its oldest known inception: in the form of Set, the Egyptian deity of the desert, storms, and darkness.
They conceive of him as a positive figure, a challenger of stagnant order, a breaker of misconceptions, kinda like Prometheus the Titan, who stole fire from the gods in order to give it to Man, thus destroying the status quo.
Their relationship with their deity is not so much centred around submitting and obeying, but more like a teacher-pupil-bond.

And in the end, there are stupid teenagers at the fringes of the "goth"-culture, who just want to be crass and flashy, but usually don't know what they're doing.

I've only ever encountered a few, 1 of them seemed to know what he was on about, the other two just seemed like mini-goths who felt like they had something to prove.

The one who did have something worthwhile to say just basically told me it's non-theistic, and it basically just serves to go against Christian preachings. For example, instead of turning the other cheek if someone tries to hurt you, warn them you will retaliate with extreme force. If they still attack you, then destroy them.

Instead of 'eye for an eye', it's an 'eye for two eyes'. That's about the only thing I can remember anyways. :|

I disagree..I think pretty much anything can be found on the internet.

I'm a huge fan of LaVeyan Satanism myself.

To my knowledge, Satanists don't believe in the Satan of the Bible literally. They are essentially Atheists who use the idea of Satan as a representation of indulgence and pleasure. They don't believe anything in Christianity is true, they didn't just decide to follow Satan instead of God, they revere Satan as a symbol rather than an actual being.

As I understand it, the religion was originally established for tax benefits...I could be wrong in all of this however, it is just the little information I have gathered.

eudaimonia,

Mark

I made this thread for Truth_Tom (or Tom_Truth). In another thread he claimed to be a satanist. I didn't want to derail that thread so here we are... but no Tom.

Thanks anyway to those who responded.

Yeah, you describe LaVeyan Satanists and the Church of Satan - but there are others as well. (Although even theistic Satanists bear very little resemblance to the "Satan worshippers" depicted in pop culture.)

Just a friendly reminder:
Satanism
The promotion of Satanism is strictly prohibited on this board.

We realize no one's promoted Satanism thus far, but since Satanism is a touchy subject for some, I've been asked to post this reminder of our one particular rule on this subject.
Carry on.
