  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I saw the other thread on Santa and I do have something to say. First off what does Santa have to do with Jesus? Christmas is December 25 have yall researched why Christmas is December 25 if not it is something you might want to check into. I saw much in the defense of Santa. I even saw where Someone posted that not lying to your children and telling them that there is a Santa will destroy their childhood. I also read on some of the post that Santa is harmless. I think we might need to take a little time and really dig into this Santa Clause on Jesus Birthday which is not his birthday just a day we picked and yes it was picked for a reason and maybe some might want to look into the real reason we celebrate Christmas at the time we do. I could go into some of this deeper but it would take to long so if interested in what your teaching your children go and research it as I did you will be surprised.

Jesus was born to us as our savior. We have decided to celebrate his birth by spending money we don't have, teaching our children that Christmas is all about what they will get. Our children are learning how to spend money at Christmas to make other people happy. I don't really see to many of todays children thinking about what they can give of themselves to others all they know is give me, give me, give me. I just wander if on one Christmas morning if Jesus came and sat beside you and looked at you eye to eye. Would you be proud of how you were celebrating his birthday(which is not his birthday and the Bible does not tell us to celebrate his birthday if God wanted us to do this he would have told us how and when but he does not mention it and I am quite sure it wouldn't be Santa) and giving all the glory to Santa. Some may say that Santa is not getting the glory if you think this you might want take a drive through your fair town and see if there signs up every telling of Jesus. You might see something about Jesus on some of the churches signs. Mostly it is all commercial and wanting you to buy something. How could we possibly think Santa is harmless. The Bible clearly tells us that liars have not place in heaven. I don't know how everybody else sees a lie but I truly think that telling children that a little fat man in a red suite is going to enter their home on Christmas Eve night leave presents for every child in the whole world and return to the North Pole in his sleigh pulled by flying Reindeer and the leader of the pack has a glowing red nose. When he arrives back at the North Pole all his little elf's that work diligently on making all the xboxes and many other toys. Jesus did not say we could tell white small fun lies he said there is no place with him for liars. He also said not to miss lead the children. Well maybe I am missing something but I think that or Lord and Savior might not want to share the lime light with Jolly old St Nick. Do you think that Jesus would himself or would ask you to spend money most don't have to give our children presents in the name of Santa. I more think he would me much more please if we followed his scriptures. The Bible tells us that religion is taking care of the poor, widows and orphans. So do you think that he would bless you sitting in your living room with several hundreds dollars of toys for more than likely ungrateful children that would have thought the world had ended if they did not get tons of things under the tree. While children are literally dying around the world because they are sick and have no food. Is this what the Bible tells us? Santa is an easy way out. We can just buy our way though Christmas and that way we don't have to take the time to put all aside for a day and teach our children about giving of themselves. What I am gathering from some of the post I read is that our children are being deprive of something if we teach them to worship Jesus and leave Santa out of this day we have put aside in our country to remember the greatest gift we could have ever received the Son our Savior who would one day die for us. The devil works in some very sweet ways to make us think we are doing good when we are really doing bad. What I think I am hearing Jesus is not enough for our children on Christmas day. I think that is really sad. What songs does your child sing more at Christmas time Jesus or Santa. Do your children get excited because it is a time to give God all the Glory or are they excited about what will be done for them. Our children also learn that Santa is not fair he gives really good toys to some children even if they are bad but other children get little are nothing because their parents don't have the money or just don't care if their children have Christmas or not. Is believing in Santa going to help the children who don't have a Christmas. Are we doing Gods work at Christmas.

Easter is the same Jesus died and suffered to give us life and what are we doing we celebrate this blessed occasion with a bunny rabbit that delivers eggs and candy. Are you getting message here. Every day that we have put aside for our Lord and Savior he has to for some reason I don't understand share it with some stupid lie we tell our children to make the day fun I think we are sending the message that Jesus is not enough we have to lie to our children on the very days that we should be giving over to Jesus. Who does the Bible say is the master of lies I do believe it is Satan. Do you see how the devil has squeezed in on these days to throw a shadow so that Jesus is not recognized in stead it is the lie which is Satan that is so important. Would it be easier for you to miss a church service on Christmas day or would it be easier to not give your child presents from Santa. Which would you do if you had to make a chioce bring your child to be with others that are celebrating the gift we received so many years ago. Are would you chose to stay home and give to your children. Which would you do. So are you of the world or with Jesus. He said there is only two sides you are either with Him or against Him. Which are you teaching your child.

By the way I agree with the original poster on Santa. My children do not believe in Santa. Yes I do have some people to ask me to tell my children not to tell their children there is not Santa. If I do that then I am still letting Satan in by telling my children to go along with the lie. My children are healthy and happy. It is December 10th and guess what my children have not told me what they want for Christmas. They are excited about the candy we are making together to hand out to friends and family. They also have asked if they could work for some money to send to the children that they see on TV that are so hungry. They do not seem to be suffering not one bit.

Wow. I really like this post. Thank you. I don't know if I agree 100% but I must say that as a new Christian I've lived both types of Christmas. You're right in that we usually spend the month of december frantically trying to buy up a bunch of stuff, stressing about material things, and it's not good. I really noticed a difference this year as my "holiday spirit" is becoming rooted in Christ. Its more fulfilling to anticipate Jesus coming, a gift that tops anything under the tree, ever. I must say though, that in the case of children it might be tough to try to present Christmas for what it is. I mean can you really explain to a four year old that Jesus needed to come and die for our sins because we are all sinners? I think some of Christianity's themes require a certain level of maturity, and to teach them to kids at a young age, I fear, could lead to those principles getting watered down. But generally I would agree so much that the holiday season has become quite a sham :-/

just to add... Yea I think that it's weird Santa has to come on Christmas day. I mean I understand that people want to get into the giving spirit (like ole Saint Nick) to make light of a dark time of year, but why on earth should it be on Christmas day? I wish that we would have two separate holidays, even if they were in the same month. I just read the Screwtape Letters and I think it's true what CS Lewis says about the devil's tricks. The devil doesn't need to lead you to deceit, but rather he just needs to distract you from the truth. In many ways "Santa" has done just that. It's sad how people can take something so seemingly pure as Saint Nicholas, and corrupt his memory into a mythical, fat, elf-ruling, weirdo who stands for nothing beyond the distribution of toys on Christmas.

At 14 months I remember being fascinated by the idea of having a tree in the house, and I couldn't fathom wanting anything else for Christmas. So yeah I think it's very possible to develop pure ideas in a child by the time they are 4, w/o needing to resort to lying which will likely jade them when they find out. I've heard of a few people actually coming to know the Lord as young as 5, but I haven't met anyone like that.

At 3 Ella, my grand daughter is fascinated with the concept of The Cross and sees it/and Him everywhere.

Jesus loves us though we didn't love Him
- she knows about all this. A perfect understanding of God's Truth to display at such a young age.

My kids all know and understand that Christmas is Jesus' birthday. They understand that we get presents, but that Jesus was and is the best present of all. They enjoy talking about Santa coming, but they also know that "Santa" is Mom and Dad. They are not interested in sitting on his lap, or telling him what they want for Christmas.

I believe that Santa Claus is not evil in and of itself. Like most other things, it must be kept in proper perspective.

Just my humble opinion... that you can teach your kids the truth without having a desire to remove the simple innocent fun things from Christmas. You can also do things for right reasons rather than the wrong reasons and have good limits with what you do, always reminding your children of who Jesus is and who Santa is not... without killing Jolly ol Saint nick. It can be done. You don't need to reduce your holidays to stringent religious ceremonies. Holidays are for the kids... lets see them happy. Were parents we can figure out ways to do it right. We figure everything else out.

Wow! Amen and Amen!! You are absolutely and positively right on target. Santa (rearrange two letters and it spells Satan) is a false god and a creation of Satan to deceive young minds and to draw them away from Jesus and to him. Satan has given Santa all the same attributes as Almighty God - sees all, knows all, is all present. Remember that Satan wanted to be God. Through Santa, he can be, and the purpose of celebrating Jesus' birth on December 25th (the birthday of a false god) is to combine the two together - Jesus, the true God with Santa, the false god, and to get Christians to celebrate them side by side. What did God tell the Israelites and the church about combining the worship of idols and false gods with worship of him? He hated it and he still does! Who gets top billing at Christmas? Santa! What is in the minds of young children? A baby in a manger or getting presents? How Christians are so deceived! We need to wake up church and we need to stop buying into Satan's lies and deceptions that pull us and our children away from pure devotion to Jesus Christ and that gets us and our children following after false gods - Santa, greed, etc. How did Jesus say he wanted to be remembered? Via remembering his blood shed for us and his body broken for us through communion and through examination of the heart and repentance and clean hearts. What does Jesus want for us as a celebration of him? He wants us as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable unto God which is our reasonable service of worship. He wants us not conformed to the pattern of the world (Santa, greed, etc.) but we are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds so that we can prove what God's will his - his good and perfect will.

How do you see Santa as innocent as the other poster said he is taken glory from Jesus. Nothing is take the glory from Jesus. Also just as she said he is no different than Jesus if you look at how Santa he is like Jesus in many ways. Children are taught that he lives forever and never dies. Santa knows if you are good or bad Santa knows all. Why does Santa have so many qualities of God I just really can't understand why people are so pro Santa when the Bible so clearly say we should not have idols. The Bible says many will be deceived in the last days. That we should not be of the world. I think this kinda things is what the Bible is talking about when it refers to being in the world. It also says many will disagree and will not see. No Gods put before him. So Santa is not a Idol here is the definition .An image used as an object of worship. A false god. One that is adored, often blindly or excessively. Something visible but without substance. Santa is not a lie.A gross falsification or misrepresentation of the facts, with constant repetition and embellishment to lend credibility. To make a statement that one knows is false. With intent to deceit Isn't Christmas a time of greed. Christmas is kinda like alcohol and substance abuse at first it is used to make something bad not feel so bad but in the end it turns out to be something that makes you stumble and can make you lose everything family and money. By the time you realize what is happening you are addicted and what would the good ol' buddies that drink with you think. It is an addiction. Christmas was a clever scam by Satan and it worked. Many are deceived to think it is fun and cute which it is if you don't look at the people who suffer because of it like a family that is to poor to pay bills and get their children gifts People kill themselves over these thinks. Many that have no family how happy is Christmas for them. The Bible says we should not celebrate a birth but death Ecclesiastes 7:1(NIV) 1 A good name is better than fine perfume, and the day of death better than the day of birth. We cannot really conceive this because the loss of the living is so great. This being said in the Bible do you think that God wanted us to celebrate Jesus birth or more likely the Easter Celebration without the Bunny. We do take the time off to give to Jesus we enjoy family and we do give the children something on Christmas but we don't go in debt and our children aren't spoiled to the fact that it is Christmas and we should go above and beyond our means to make sure they fill like they have as many earthly possessions as the next kid.

How silly. Santa has taken no glory from Jesus. Nothing can do that - Jesus is glorified, whether we give Him the praise He deserves or not. Anything can be idolized. Some people idolize Santa, yes. But no more than people idolize singers or sports stars, and not nearly as much as they idolize money.

Santa has the glory you choose to give him. Santa does not threaten Jesus' glory, except in worldly households, which in any case do not give Jesus glory anyway.

When a youth discovers that Santa, or the Easter bunny is a fake, it can easily make it harder for them to differentiate that Jesus is Real !

Also the materialistic hyping up, and razzle-dazzle of lights, tinsel, and shiny ornaments may easily distract and compete against embracing a spiritually minded perspective.

Even so, the elect will yet be able to see their way through it all.

Really have you asked many children why they are excited about Christmas and how they would feel about Christmas that did not have presents for them. Are you saying that more is said and focused on Jesus at Christmas Time than Santa. If Santa were really alive he would be making a fortune putting the Santa approved merchandise and modeling I have to say if Christmas is going to be so commercial it is good that we decided to have a Santa because there is something very wrong with the idea of Joseph, Mary or Jesus on store front trying to sell the latest items in the store. So I guess it is good to have Santa for that reason. Just think of it an advertisement displayed on front of the Walmart store window and sale paper ad selling their new mongoose bike and instead of there being a Santa standing with a bag on his back placing a new bike by the tree. Instead you see Joseph helping a 6 year old Jesus learning to ride a bike. Maybe Mary could help to sell the latest toaster, crock pot or coffee maker. I guess Santa has his place commercial sales
