I also think there is no harm in including Santa as long as the child knows what the TRUE story of Christmas is and why we celebrate it to begin with. Good discussion here, I'm enjoying these forums!

I'm not trying to debate here.  I am concerned, however, if you think that Jesus is the true story of Christmas.  It can be for you, but historically Christmas is connected to the winter solstice.  I believe it was Constantine who converted many pagan holidays to Christian ones.  Winter Solstice became Christmas and the worship of the fertility goddess Ishtar became Easter.

Does anyone else out there celebrate Kwanzaa?

I don't THINK that Jesus is the true story of Christmas, I KNOW it! Are you saying that Christmas is not the celebration of Jesus birth??

Christmas is the day that we now celebrate Jesus birth.  I wasn't denying that.  I was just checking to make sure you realized that originally winter solstice was the celebration at this time of year.  It was hundreds of years after Jesus death that they made it into Christ's mass.  Lots of the Christmas traditions have pagan origins.

In my house, Santa has become the helper to God and Jesus. Santa is a man who lives up in the north pole who God sends lists of the good little boys and girls, and they get a special present from Santa, but its really from God. I explained to them that some people dont believe in God, so God lets Santa take some credit until they are read to believe in God. I dont know if its right or wrong to explain it that way, but it helps my kids and they seem to think that that makes perfect sense.

I don't look at Santa so much as a LIE, but as imaginary.

I lie implies a willful deception, to cover up blame, to shirk responsibility, to create a damaging disbelief in someone.

The story of Santa isn't about lying to children, to harm them in any way. Perhaps if you use Santa as an excuse to avoid Christ, I could see this as something truly damaging. But imagination is a wonderful thing, and a child's sense of the imaginary helps them to stretch beyond the limitations of the physical world.

The daydreamers of today are the inventors of tomorrow.

Peace be with you,
