Salt Lake City was awarded the 2034 Winter Olympic Games and an IOC meeting in Paris. From what I understand, many of the venues used in the 2002 Olympics will be reused, after updates, for the 2034 games. The venues are all still in use, with a trust account of money, from the 2002 games, being used to fund operation and upkeep of the facilities. They are largely used for training, particularly for youth to get involved in winter sports. The hope is to do the same, for the 2034 Olympics to leave a further legacy of facilities that are used for youth training.

One other new idea that Salt Lake is planning is to create a "village," somewhat similar to the athletes village, for the families of the athletes. It is something Lindsey Vonn, a former Olympian who is a part of the SLC Organizing Committee, came up with to help improve things for the athletes -- that athletes won't have to worry about their families being able to find housing (particularly affordable housing) or transportation.

Will we have flying cars by then, or drones that film the Olympics for VR headsets? Just kidding, but the 2030s used to be so far in the future when I was a kid in the 2010s. Now 2034 is only a decade away. Time flies, my sister in Christ. Also, good move by the SLC to allow for athletes to bring their families.

But yes, hopefully the 2034 games go well, as long as the climate is not too warm by then.

One of the interesting wrinkles is the the IOC twisted USOPC's arm into signing a document respecting the IOC's anti-doping process, (in the context of a US independent investigation into Chinese doping at the Tokyo Games.)

Olympic officials try to crush U.S. probes of China doping, threaten Salt Lake Games

In a series of fierce statements coordinated by IOC President Thomas Bach, top IOC committee members blasted U.S. officials for opening probes into handling of the China case by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Ingmar De Vos, an IOC committee member from Belgium said a probe by the U.S. Congress and a criminal investigation launched by the U.S. Department of Justice"are extremely worrying and basically, for us, unacceptable."

Speaking in Paris just ahead of the vote, the chair of the USOPC, Gene Sykes, said he agreed to the binding language.

The case of 23 Chinese swimmers

The China scandal involves 23 swimmers who tested positive for banned performance enhancing substances on at least two occasions prior to the Tokyo Summer Games in 2021.

WADA officials have acknowledged keeping the test results secret until they were revealed by journalists this spring.

Eleven of those athletes are expected to compete again in Paris.

On Wednesday, members of the IOC said they agreed with WADA's decision to accept a claim by Chinese officials that the positive tests were the result of accidental contamination.

USADA's Tygart, whose organization monitors and penalizes American athletes if they cheat, testified before a House panel in June that WADA had failed for years to properly punish Chinese and also Russian sports teams that regularly use performance-enhancing drugs.

I wanted to post this, except I was lazy and hoped someone else would do it.

Overall, I like the Olympic® competition. But the organization is hugely corrupt and works as a sportwashing agent for authoritarians. Consequently I dont get that "Olympics® feeling" youre supposed to have.
