Saints

Merry Christmas everyone! A quick question....can any of you recommend some saints to read about who might have struggled with Church teachings or faith in God. I know about the new book regarding Mother Theresa (although I haven't read it yet)...but was wondering if you knew of any others. Thanks and Happy New Year to all of you!

Thomas has an excellent riposte to some of the truly insipid things being said about Mother Teresa in light of some recently publicized letters that make it clear that she (like many, many other saints) struggled with doubt and a feeling of God’s absence.

Augustine's Confessions might do it... of course, once he converted he DID agree with God so maybe not so helpful. But it's comforting to know that one of the great sinners became one of the great saints.... it leaves me hopeful

Also St. Therese de Lisieux in chapter 9 of her autobiography Story of a Soul wrestles with doubts in her "Dark Night".

St. Anthony's bio is interesting in that nothing he did for the first 2/3rd of his life actually work out.
At one point the head of his order won't even give him an assignment.

And his calling ended up to something he never even considered.

I was going to recommend Augustine's Confessions, but someone beat me to it.

He goes through the intellectual journey of his whole life, the different philisophies he subscribed to, and the intellectual process of converting to Christianity and wrestling with questions and doubts is pretty clearly explained by him. Also, it is just an excellent book and a classic of Western Civilization.
