  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is it me, or do the men executing Saddam look like terrorists (check out CNN front page today)? Hooded, civilian clothing. We sure know how to take the high road, morally. Why is it again that the world hates us Americans?
The world may have good reasons to dislike America, but this is not one of them. Saddam got what he deserved.

Whew, I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought they resembled the same "thugs" Saddam used to murder people. . . .

As to the question you asked, I'm not gonna touch that with a 10 foot pole. (I don't hate America at all, but yet I can still list a few reasons. .. . )

Huh? I think the hoods were more to protect them (their identities) from attacks from Saddam sympathisers.

Of course they were to hide their identities.

But they really looked pretty much like criminals or the terrorists you get to see in those blackmail videos were they ask for the return of troops in exchange for civilian's lives.

While I don't doubt the man deserves to be dead, I can't imagine I'm the only one who has serious problems with the idea of introducing a fledgling democracy to the concept of universal justice by executing their former leader in a sham trial.

There's more than black and white here.

Nobody but Saddam's faithful will argue the guy was a dirtball that should have gone to meet his maker long ago, but to turn him over to a government we (the US) put in place, that we knew hate him and would rush him to the gallows, and then pretend we had no responsibility in his death is ridiculous.

First of all, Saddam got what he deserved - I can only hope his neck didn't snap, if onlythat he had to suffer more.

Following that, yeah, the hoods were undoubtedly to protect the identities of the hangmen. Following that, the civilian clothes were probably to help send the message that it wasn't the government that hung him, but the people, in a trial that wasn't quite fair, because too many of the judges and lawyers on the prosecution had to fear for their lives for the duration of the case.

Also, a big factor in foreigners hating on America is that we are currently one of the most influential and powerful countries in the world, and are probably completely at the top. Another issue is the perceived wealth of the nation. A common belief is that we all live in McMansions. Beyond that, consider this: There is negative propoganda regarding our country in our own media. Consider what the rest of the world gets? I have a friend located in Australia, and she is convinced that we have the highest rate of rape in the world - per capita. That is absolutely false, but she learned it in school. Of course, forget the third world countries where rape is an every day occurence. I think the issue is that we in the United States simply report rape when it occurs every now and then, as compared to countries where the police will just rape the woman when she comes to them to complain.

Another issue is that we are considered to be at the forefront of the western world. Western society, however, is usually hated in countries that are not themselves somewhat Westernized.

Beyond that, America sticks her hand into everything. Have you ever watched a cartoon with that one particular archetype: The character that always tries to help, but oftentimes accidentally makes it worse for the person she tried to help. That is often how we're viewed. Of course, any view like that is of questionable value, because nobody can really tell what was going to happen, but most people like to think that they can do just fine fo rthemselves, sow ehn somebody else comes in and things don't get better, they can say they were going to get better before that person came in and appeared to botch things up.

So, people hate America because we are (a) stronger than them, (b) richer than them, and because we (c) hate on ourselves almost as much as (d) they are taught to hate us. We've also grabbed from every jar in the Candy Store (e)

My interpretation. Don't be afraid of a tough question, y'all. It's the internet, and if you use it right, it's even completely anonymous.

You can stop stating Saddam was a criminal, we all agree. I guess I should have stated the purpose of the hoods, we all understand that too. The point was, we're no different than the rest of the world, but we still see ourselves as superior morally which gives us the right to do things we otherwise consider wrong. We invaded a weaker nation to impose our will with violence and assisted, I would say directly instigated, the execution of their former ruler. Might makes right. If you're anyone other than an American or a Brit, maybe a Canadian, you would rightly view America with a great deal of mistrust. As the Mexicans say as they lament their plight, "so far from heaven, so close to the USA".

If you try and imagine what a hanging would look like, from an alien perspective, all you'd see is humans acting savagely and mercilessly. Justice I believe cannot be emotional, because it then becomes vengeance. If justice were emotional, parents/children/partners of murdered people would be lashing and shooting and hanging the culprits, instead the culprits are jailed. To hang Saddam which the USA was totally complicit in, is to reaffirm that human society is civilised only on the outside.

Nope, you are right.

Let's put it into perspective. Saddam Hussein was a barbarian - but so are many of the Iraqis, the Iranians, the Saudis, the Libyans, the Syrians, the Egyptians, the Jordanians, the Hezbollah, the Shi'ites, the Sunni's, the Chechnyans, the Yemenites, the Turks, Israelies, the Americans, the Europeans, the Africans, the Chinese, the Cambodians, the, the, the....

Saddam Hussein's public execution was a disgrace on humankind. We should be better than that. That kind of brutal mentality is what we are fighting against. Supposedly.

Most westernized European countries, the Vatican, Amnesty International, all condemn this public execution. We don't need to stoop to Saddam Hussein's level of barbarity.
