  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

i have said this before, and no doubt i will say it again, but i do not mind looking stupid if i learn something.

if i keep the sabbath, then does that mean the food i east must be cold? (especially on the saturday half of the day)

I ask as I understand that the lighting and extinguishing of fire (for cooking or car engines) is classed as one of the forms of 'work'.

please can someone explain it to me very simply.

Many thanks

When cooking something there is also the prep time that can be a lot of work. As for me and my family we have food prepared on Friday. Crock pots are great for this. Microwaves can heat a plate of food up very fast. As for car driving we would drive to congregation or to someone’s home for Shabbat. We have no problem in turning on or off lights. Remember this, Shabbat is to be a JOY! Relax, put G-d first, read, study, talk, take a nap, and take a walk {if the weather is nice), go to a park and have a picnic and study. If your house is on fire extinguish the fire, if you’re Furness goes out in the dead of winter go light it, if you walk into a dark room turn a light on. I get a kick{joy] getting up Shabbat morning knowing that I don’t have to prepare my coffee pot to make coffee, because it was done just before Friday night & I just have to push a button. Or all I have to do is push a button {or have the timer set) on the crock pot and in one or 2hr I got a hot lunch. Breakfast we always have Bagels & cream cheese or sweet rolls. Again Shabbat should be a JOY!
I hope this helps.

Crock Pot recipes for Shabbat.

Beans, Chips, & Cheese.
1 large Onion chopped fine
3 cloves garlic crushed or chopped
1 Jalapeno chopped, Opt
1 bag Tortilla Chips
Grated Cheddar Cheese

Directions: On Friday; In a frying pan Sautee Onion, garlic, & Jalapeno. Empty into Crock pot 3 or 4 canes of black beans; add Onion, garlic, & Jalapeno and mix into black beans. On Shabbat place crock pot into liner with timer set. When beans are hot.
Put on a plate Tortilla Chips, top with Cheddar Cheese, add hot black beans to this and enjoy. Other toppings can be added: Sour cream, chopped tomatoes, pickled Jalapeno, Salsa.

Hotdogs & hamburgers
On Friday; Grill hotdogs & burgers. in bottom of Crock pot place a wire rack to keep food off the bottom of Crock pot, or use crumbled up Heave duty Aluminum foil. Add just enough water to touch the bottom of wire rack or foil. Place the cooked hotdogs on wire rack / foil, then burgers. Cover hotdogs & burgers with Heave duty Aluminum foil and with a sharp knife punch holes all over the Aluminum foil. Now place Hotdogs & hamburgers buns on top of this Aluminum foil. When your timer clicks on one hr before you eat, the steam from the water will steam your food warm.
Alternative to water, this is what I do: I grill my burgers and boil my hotdogs in beer. Then in the bottom of my crock pot I put the boiled beer instead of water.
Serve with chips.

Other Shabbat foods that can be heated for Saturday.
Corn on the cob [add a little water to crock pot will steam precooked corn warm]
Vegetation Baked beans [precooked hotdogs can be laid on top of Vegetation backed beans and heated]
beef stew

def. crock pot it.

and if you can't afford one (as they can be pricey sometimes) you can keep a pot of stew or soup going on the stove at the #1 setting all night long.

A friend of mine said her mom always had pastries for Shabbat. She'd prepare them at home or buy them on Fridays, so they had something Sweet for the Sabbath each week.

I thought that was cool, but for me to make pastries is really REALLY involved... so I haven't done it yet.

I use two things: crockpot and shabbat stove.

I always throw stuff into the crockpot on low on Friday afternoon. By Saturday it's delicious. There are wonderful recipes for traditional Cholent online, but I improvise as well. A lot of times it's just whatever kosher bullion I have plus leftovers or open a few cans of veggies. Sometimes I'll get the pre-packaged dry soup mixes in the kosher section of the market. You don't really have to make it soup -- you can do all sorts of things in a crock-pot. But I'm a soup lover.

If you look up "shabbat stove" online, you'll learn how to do this. For me, I'm nervous about leaving fires going when I'm asleep -- I worry they will go out and we'll die of gas poisoning. So I forked out about $60 and bought an electric Shabbat stove. This is NOT used for cooking. HOWEVER, you CAN use it to reheat food which is already cooked. I turn it on before candle lighting, and anything I want to reheat, I just put onto this grill.

also check out the recomendations in the thread "whats waiting for you when you return from synagogue tonight?"

remember, speaking from experience, take it one step at a time. Noone runs a marathon when they first learn to walk.

I have two crock pots and one timer steamer.

Torah talked about Hot dogs. I came up with another way. I saved a large can that was just under the size of my crock pot. In this I put baked beans ( vegetarian kind, bush makes these and they are Kosher) and add it to the crock pot. Then I fill around the can with water and add the hot dogs, you can cook up to a dozen in there and feed many people, add some preprepared salads and such and you have a hearty meal for lunch!

I love those Bush's Vegetarian beans! Except when my sis-in-law doctors them up with strips of bacon.
Some guy comes into a congregation I attended before and open a very large can of pork & beans and put them into “his” pot to warm them up. When told that we don’t eat pork he proceeded to fish out the pieces of pork from the beans and said “there” all clean!

been there, seen that...

I was the kitchen master at the last synagogue we attended and responsible to keep the standards within those the rabbi set... it was the hardest and most ticklish thing to try to get new people and visitors to understand why I could not allow certain foods to be set out. What was sometimes harder was confronting regular members on the same topic ... we kept our onegs to dairy and this eliminated some of the problem and gave an easier platform from which to eliminate certain things.... but then it raised the issue of the cheeses .... it was decided I was not to even go there.... that made it more difficult in some ways as it set a movable and misty boundary .... ah well, at least they were trying

p.s. Yes the rabbi was Jewish, he and his wife, both from So Africa and then 13 years in Israel where they kept kosher ... but they were ambivalent about requiring those same standards at shul, it was mostly the Jews that complained about having to keep kosher, go figure , usually the gentiles were happy to comply but the Jews had a hard time giving up their treif .... although we did go "whole hog" (pun intended) with kosher for Peaskh, Rosh HaShanah and Sukkot.

I would laugh if it weren't so sad. My brother has known for 2 years that I was eating Kosher and I patiently taught him the main categories to NOT eat. He has it down but his wife, whom I love dearly, continues to go "Oops, I cooked the green beans with bacon, the baked beans with bacon, the potato salad has bacon in it, ham sandwiches, pork hot dogs, crabcakes, spiced shrimp, etc. etc. etc." I did find a lonely hamburger to eat but had to insist that I did NOT want a bacon burger. Whaaaaat?

Christians think it's a hardship to give up those foods but it's so not!

ewww. Maybe this is the reason I still can't bring myself to eat baked beans.

I gave those up a looooooong time ago when we lived overseas first (18 years ago I think). Everytime I'd get them in my mouth I just had this icky urge, so I kept telling my dad I couldn't/wouldn't eat them.

My sister on the other hand, begged for 'Beanie Weenies' (I'm sure some of ya'll remember that brand) for her birthday and other occasions. BLECH

Mom had to convince my dad that no matter what he did, how he fussed and pleaded, I just couldn't eat those. And he finally quit asking a few years ago.

OTOH, I cooked some green beans the other day and just threw a lamb leg in with it. Man that was the best pot of green beans I'd ever had!

In the USA, I believe that Crisco is kosher or at least pareve. This is what my mother used in pastry, always. It's vegetable shortening. otoh, my mom's Welsh cookies never turned out like those I ate (pre-kosher) in Wales!

no, tallow will not do as well as lard (nothing works as well as lard in pastry, it is one of things we give up ).... try Crisco - it is kosher and does a pretty good job and it is Parave as well
