I don't think they would have. If you look at the Daniel 2, in the prophecy that Nebuchadnezzar had, there is actually a pollution or corruption of the christian church which takes place there, and it is in the feet of iron and clay. Iron represented the Pagan Roman Empire and potter's clay is used in the bible as a symbol or a metaphor of God's people. In the prophecy, the clay is first called potter's clay and then called miry clay. Potters clay, is pure clay, free from sediments which Miry clay is polluted and corrupted clay. When Potters clay mixes with the Iron you get Miry clay. When God's people, his church, adopts principles and doctrines from pagan Rome it becomes a polluted church. This is not something God wanted. It was the strategy of Satan to corrupt the church from within instead of trying to destroy the church from outside.
