  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Does anyone have any incite into the selection of Ruth Kelly as the Minister of Education by Tony Blair? I have read some articles online and they seem to be mostly negative because she is a devout Catholic and is associated with Opus Dei. ANy additional info and commentary would be appreciated.

Yes, I know a bit about her.

She is very intellegent, I believe Oxbridge and has very rapidly risen the Labour party ranks. Her forte seems to be in economics.

with regards to religion, yes, she is in Opus Dei and her brother (who is now a super numerary and a doctor) went to my previous school.

Ruth went to a grammar school which was non Catholic so used to come on friday evenings to The Faith society (catechism class) at my school.

Her voting history in parliament is Catholic- she is against embryonic stem cell research and has voted against it.

Basically an Orthodox Catholic with a young family, who is also a very intellegent person and a high-flyer in government.

Thanks for your input of this. How is her elevation being viewed by the "man on the street"? Is the negativity just coming from the secular media?

BTW I just noticed your Signature with the quote from "Lord of the World". R. H. Bensen is one of my favorite Catholic Authors.

Well, the whole Blunkett afair overshadowed her appointment, the man on the street isn't really in the know about her.

The scientific community is slightly worried that she might withdraw funding from research in educational institutions on embryonic stem cell research.

Other than that, there has been little talk about her related to her religion.

Everyone agrees she is certainly intellegent enough to tackle this post and they are impressed that she has been able to have a family at the same time.

New Education Secretary Ruth Kelly was plunged into a new debate over sex education in schools today.

Ms Kelly – a devout Catholic – was reported to have made it known she did not want to work in the Department of Health because of her religious beliefs on abortion and contraception.
