  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Anyone out there love Rush? I grew up listening to these guys. That's probably why I love them so much. Most people hate the lead singer's voice, and others hate the overly electronic sound...but I love it. Rush is like a breath of fresh air when all bands sound the same these days. I swear, anything original I love.

I saw Rush live last year. It was for their 30th anniversary tour. They can still put on a show.

So to all Rush fans out there: what are some of your favorite songs/albums?

"Chain Lightning", "Available Light", and "Temples Of Syrinx" are probably my favorite songs from them. I have Vapor Trails, but rarely listen to it.
ALRIGHT! We got a fan of the Presto album. "Available Light", the last song on the album, is simply amazing! It's so different from the rest of the album, too.

Yep, I'm a fan. I'm more familar with their older stuff--up through the Permanent Waves era. My son recently started playing drum so I bought the Rush In Rio dvd so he could watch Neil Peart play--that man is amazing.

My favorite song is probably Time Stands Still.

I turn my back to the wind
To catch my breath
Before I start off again
Driven on without a moment to spend
To pass an evening
With a drink and a friend.

I let my skin get too thin
I'd like to pause
No matter what I pretend
Like some pilgrim who learns to transcend
Learns to live as if each step was the end.

Time stand still
I'm not looking back
But I want to look around me now
See more of the people
And the places that surround me now.

Freeze this moment
A little bit longer
Make each sensation
A little bit stronger
Experience slips away.

I turn my face to the sun
Close my eyes
Let my defenses down
All those wounds
That I can't get unwound.

I let my past go too fast
No time to pause
If I could slow it all down
Like some captain
Whose ship runs aground
I can wait until the tide
Comes around.

Make each impression
A little bit stronger
Freeze this motion
A little bit longer
The innocence slips away.

Summer's going fast
Nights growing colder
Children growing up
Old friends growing older
Experience slips away.

I can really relate to that "children growing up, old friends growing older" line!!

Get him Anatomy of a Drum Solo and A Work In Progress too if he wants some instructional dvd's .

Back on topic...

Huge Rush fan here. I'm currently busy re-forming my old band, EverDream, and Rush has been a major influence on our style. We're even going as far as to cover all of 2112 for a battle we have scheduled later this summer. Neil Peart is easily my biggest influence as a drummer and lyricist. I still say Rush is the greatest trio of musicians to ever form up a band. It's amazing on how much sound those three guys can produce, where it takes other bands five or six members to come close to that amount of sound.

Favorite songs: Between the Wheels, Red Sector A, Natural Science, Xanadu, YYZ, La Villa Strangiato, Anthem, and a plethora of many more...

Favorite albums: Grace Under Pressure stands in at number one for me. After that, they all tie with the exception of Roll the Bones. It's the only Rush album that I can say that I can't stand. Bravado, Where's My Thing? and Dreamline are the only songs off that album that I like.

I think, musically, "Time Stand Still" is among their 20 best songs. It's just solid. I don't think there is a single flaw with that song. Even the production and secondary stuff was good.

The funny thing is that Geddy Lee, himself, believes that Roll The Bones is one of their best. As much as I respect his opinion, I was like, "WHAT?" Sometimes I think that, as brilliant as he is, he has NO ability to judge his own work, lol.

Roll The Bones is a little on the corny side. The peak of the corniness is on the title track where that really corny voice goes: Jack, relax, get busy with the facts.

The whole album to me seemed like they were going more popish with the music. Face Up is a prime example of this. Roll the Bones had the chance to be a decent song, but the rap part completely killed that. Funny thing... the deep voice that did the rap was actually Geddy.

Wow, really? I didn't know that. I thought it was Lifeson, because Lifeson has done a lot of the voice extras in the past.

I must say there are some good songs on Roll The Bones, such as: Dreamline, Bravado, Heresy, and Ghost of a Chance.

As a Percussionist, RUSH is an obvious choice for my collection! It's true that they use a bit of Synth in their music, but they have always had one of the best pure sounds in the Music Industry!

My favorite albums are - 2112, Exit Stage Left, Farewell To Kings and Hemispheres. :)

Signal trasmitted...message received...reaction making impact...invisibly.

Signals is good stuff. I have to admit: I am partial to the '81-'89 era (Moving Pictures to Presto). I think their 80s stuff was their prime.

I was turned on to Rush (and indoctrinated into the Drummers' Cult of Neil) in high school, when another drummer in marching band made me listen to "The Rhythm Method" from A Show of Hands; needless to say, I was totally blown away... Bummer though, I got into them just in time to miss the Presto tour with Primus as opening act!!! :(

My favorite album would probably be Caress of Steel, closely followed by Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres; I don't know if I can pinpoint a favorite track, but "The Necromancer" and the Exit Stage Left version of "Xanadu" are top contenders...

Gee... looks like I'm an old guy. Their are only a couple I remember, and Spirit of the Radio was my favorite to play. The mix of time signatures took quite a bit of practice to get figured out back in 1981...
