  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is my first post in the college section, I actually graduated some years ago but was reflecting on the whole greek thing.

Did anyone or is anyone considering Rush?
If so or if you have what was your experience like as a Christian? Did you have convictions that kept you from going or did you become a light in your house? Or are you currently debating weather to join?

I rushed and crossed a Greek Sorority. We are controlled by the multicultural council which means we don't target a certain type of person. Whatever race you are, it's fine. It was a great experience. We did LOTS of community service. It was like 32 hours of community service in eight weeks. We had 10 mandatory study hours per week. You weren't allowed to drink alcohol while rushing. While we don' t advertise as a Christian sorority, it is one of our founding pillars. It was great and I hope to recruit many more members to the organization.

That's neat Matt9:22. My impression was that there are few sororities living by Christian standards. But philanthropy seems pretty big and I love the idea of serving the community. I think joining a Fraternity and being a light is much harder than in a sorority.

I never heard of alchol being drunk during rush, mine was more like interviews at 18 houses in one weekend. Do you keep connected with the sisters that were in your house?

I've been thinking about rushing, but I'm pretty sure it won't happen mainly because of financial issues. I know several Christians who have rushed various fraternities or sororities and it has gone well for them. One of our sororities has a pretty high ratio of Christians who are in it, and I'm not too sure about the fraternities. I think depending on the personality and such of different people, you can still successfully be a light in the greek system even if there's not a lot, or even any other Christians in that group.

Gemini_Swede, pray about it and see if the Lord leads you to Rush. I really didn't have any money, but I still gave it a shot to see if the Lord had other plans. Rush itself didn't cost much, except clothes and time. It's exhausting if you have a lot of houses.

Thanks for your thoughts and that's good that you have friends in houses. I have some favorable memories from rushing and it's always something I can relate to when I meet someone from a certain house. Let me know if you do decide. I will pray if you do. God bless, Sampa

I know rushing doesn't necessarily cost money, but if I decide to pledge there are pretty high costs of dues. I'll definitely let you know though.

I rushed last fall and pledged to a sorority...I had alot of fun. Too much fun and ended up on suspension. :|

I guess for someone with more self-control and sense of moderation Greek life would be great, but I went to college and basically went wild. Nothing to do with the sorority, really..Just my own personal issues. :)

MissRowboat, thanks for sharing. Words of wisdom and I'm sure it'll be of good use for those thinking about joining a sorority. God bless you, Sampa

I thought about going greek my first year of college but I decided against. You really need to find out what that that sorority or frat stands for and if they allow drinking and partying...things like that. I decided as a christian that it wasn't for me. Then again I did go to one of the top 5 party schools in the U.S. so it might be different at other instututions.

Well, we don't serve alcohol during rush anyhow, but what I meant was that we don't allow new members to drink during the intake process which lasts for eight weeks. We want them to engage in self-evaluation truly deciding if this is the best move for them. That's hard to do if you're drunk every night. Everything looks good when you're drunk...or so they tell me . haha. but seriously, we don't have a sorority house because we're too new on campus, but we get together every weekend to have sisterhood event which can be watching movies, playing games, eating dinner together or having a sleepover. It's just a chance to bond.
We're just about to start rush week and we plan to take the potential new members to the boys and girls club and to a retirement home as part of the process.

No guys have posted?

I was going to rush last year, twice, though I felt the Frats at my school (it's an engineering school) were just there for you to get away from the books. I went to a couple of the "get-togethers" and basically it was just drinking, so I said no, twice. Once it was to a real Frat, the second to a Frat that just started up that doesn't really have a history or anything.

Perhaps when I transfer, but for now, I'm riding solo.

I did my freshman year and it was amazing. Last weekend we welcome 21 lovely new girls into the sorority of Sigma Sigma Sigma. Rush was a long process to do now that I'm on the other side doing the actual recruiting and it was hard deciding on which girls we wanted, but in the end it worked out and our new pledge class rocks!

I agree crombiegirl, it's something to pray about and enter with caution, and make sure you have the Lord's blessing if your Christian.

Matt9:22 thanks for sharing. It is a big decision and the girls should be sober minded about it, it's a time commitment and a sister commitment for the rest of your life. Even after college there's always a bond between other sister sorority alumna.
Sometimes the one's without houses are stronger because they struggle more. I wonder if they have less pressures, because having a house sometimes you have to keep up a standard or legacy. I could be wrong?
That's awesome, you must be excited about the start of rush, it's exhausting though from what I remember on both sides.

Seeker of truth your the first  . I know the rush process it 180 degrees different than sororitites for fraternities. I think there usually are more parties and drinking, correct me if I'm wrong. And that to be a light or Christian in a house is a whole lot harder in fraternities because parties many times happen there. Whereas they're banned from happening in sororties?
Isn't there something like "dry houses"? I'm not sure if I heard this somewhere?

glamourdoll, thanks for posting. I'm glad you've been enjoying it, thanks for the pic too, it looks like a lot of fun. I love the matching t-shirts. How many houses did you have to rush? Are you doing the recruiting at a specific dorms floor or just assigned a group that has signed up?

Perhaps, but with the size of my school, there's only 6 fraternities and I've yet to see a "dry house".

I don't mind the drinking aspect, but the part where everybody is drunk, etc. is what keeps me from 'em. I remember going to a couple of parties at Ga Tech and I couldn't believe it: most of the kids are suppose to be pretty smart, yet they act really immature (though that's my opinion).

hmm, SeekerofTruth, do you mean small or you school is large? I went to Indiana Uni and I think there were 22 fraternities, officially greek. I think there were a couple of other kinds without houses. About 17 sorority houses I think too.

There's quite some stories I heard from other guys in fraternities about things they saw at parties.

Oh sorry, small.

It's more of a commuter school. For every 1 resident student, there is 2 to 3 commuters.

Its really interesting reading about it because we don't have anything like it here :)

But I mean like, what if you aren't a girly girl...? Would you fit in? What if you didn't drink... ever?

Just what are sororities and why is it called "greek"?

Sorority rush at my school is open to all undergrad freshman girls. Recruitment works at my school where have 9 different sororities and all girls who rush are broken into smaller groups and in those groups they visit 4 houses one day and 5 houses the next day. At the end of each visit they rank the houses in order from the top to the bottom and on the third day they get invited back to the houses that are interested in them and depending on how high they ranked them. Then on the 4th night they get invited back to the houses after ranking them and they do a craft and its very casual. Then finally on the 5th day is pref. night which is very dressy and very personal and they get invited back to the top 3 houses which want them. Then they write down the order of the houses they want and then the next day they receive an invitation to join one of the top 3 houses they liked. Sorority rush isn't for a specific dorm or house its all based on what girls we like and would want to offer membership to and which girls we don't want. The basic idea is to try and get the girls we want, but at the same time a different house might want her to so its really competitive. Another thing is weeding out the girls who don't uphold our ideals as members so character and classiness is a big thing with my house.

I was in a fraternity at Indiana University...actually one of the best times of growth for me...I was involved in Campus Crusade as well and we got a bible study started in the house...we now have about 10 guys coming weekly who are excited about doing ministry there...it's pretty amazing to see the Lord working in such a dark place.
