  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have a stupid question that I already know the answer to (to some degree). I gave blood to the Red Cross last week. I have a 5K in 2 weeks. I know it takes a while for the red blood cells to come back. That has to effect my endurance. I did not think of it when I gave blood. Does anyone know much about this matter?

I've given blood before, and have only noticed a drop in performance for about a day or two afterwards. Just make sure you eat well....I use it as an excuse to enjoy a lot of raisins, I've heard they help with iron.

It sounds like you have some exciting races coming up. I have seen Spartan races advertised, but my first thought was that I did not want to get my expensive running shoes muddy. However, I like to try new things, maybe I should try one. I also plan to try an indoor triathalon this year. I think you run on a treadmill and ride an exercise bike and do a little swimming. We don't have any mountain races that I know of. I want to try some cross country racing. I have a list of races in my state. They list some mud racing, I don't know if that is the same as the Spartan racing. I am trying to get into shape so I can do these things. I have a long list of races scheduled. I am especially drawn to the races that raise money for charities that I believe in, and they are mostly 5 & 10Ks, but I want to try some other races too. Well, hang in there and keep up the good work and enjoy your races.

I'm new to running. Right now I'm focusing on my form, breathing and stamina. I run about 10 miles a week so far, because that's all I have time for until I can quicken my pace and cover more ground in the limited time I have. I'm training for a 5k in November. My goal is to finish under 30 minutes.

It sounds like you know what you are doing. I think you will reach your goal. Maybe you could measure about a 3.1 mile distance and time yourself on it occasionally to see where you are at on your time. It takes persistance to make slow steady progress. I am working hard to improve my time. I have several 5Ks scheduled and plan to try some longer races. I have gotten back into running again a few months ago. I ordered a running book from Amazon yesterday and it just cost 1 penny plus $4 shipping. I hope it is a good book so I can learn some things. I work out 3 days a week for about 2 1/2 hrs each time. Besides running, I have to do alot of leg exercises to keep my knee from being injured. I never had a serious knee injury but it had started hurting in the past and that is why I gave up running before. Now I think I know how to prevent the problem from happening again. I have a 5K next weekend. I am working on getting down to 30 minutes. It is a challenge to try to improve my time. If I keep at it I hope to keep improving but only time will tell what I can eventually achieve. I never had been a good running. I don't have the right kind of body for it I guess. I have tried to modify my running style so it won't be so awkward. You said you are working on your breathing. Could you tell me more about that because I would like to learn more about that. What is the proper way to breath while running?

NeverAlone~are you a "gazelle"~that is, a lean mid-height sort of build? Do you do sprints along with roadwork?

And I bet you subscribe to Runner's World ~I miss that magazine but don't read it anymore because it'll motivate me and I'll be out there with sore knees again:sorry:

Do you think I am overdoing it? To answer your questions: I am 6 feet tall and lanky and have always "bounced when I walk or run". When I was a kid the other kids made fun of the way I walked. I try to no longer bounce on the balls of my feet but don't have a natural effecient running styles. I don't do sprints on sprints on the roadway and I don't subscribe to Runner's World. I do have an obsessive personality and tend to push myself hard.

You might check out a Runners World, libraries usually have them along with the usual magazines stands there are usually some good articles if you can get past the ads lol--naw I don't think you overdo it most of us in the US underdo it ;) just know your limits. My wife's 95 y/o grandmother said that was the key to good health and longevity.

I think I am on the right track this time. Since about age 40 I tried to get into long distance running about 3 times and each time I had to quit because my knee started hurting. It was the first time in my life I ever had knee problems. This time I have been working out about 6 months or so without any knee pain so I must be doing it right this time. The only running I do except in races is on the treadmill. I plan to do more walking also to build up my legs.
I think I will go by the library and start reading Runner's World. It helps to learn more about conditioning and running.
If you want you can tell me more about your experience with running.
By the way, what does Molon Labe mean? (if you don't mind my asking). I assume it is Spanish. I noticed your friend request and tried to respond to it affirmatively but don't know if I pressed all the right buttons to make it go through. I am not good with computers.

I read where running shoes just last about 500 miles. Would good supportive insoles extend the life of the shoes so you would not have to replace them so often? Replacing insoles would be cheaper than replacing shoes.
My daughter ran her first 5K with me today. We ran at a slow pace because she was afraid she could not finish the race. However, she did well and she said it gave her the confidence to run in other 5Ks in the future.

I was talking with my chiropractor on Friday about my knee pain I get from doing a little jogging, told him how I was diagnosed with "patella/femoral syndrome"~explained what it was and how the patella is rubbing against the femur because of the shock and why (for me anyhow) walking and walking faster is a better alternative even if it can be frustrating at times. I've never been on a treadmill though I have plenty of opportunity; I often stay over in the town I work in and they have a couple of treadmills in their fitness room that I've never seen anyone using so maybe I'll sneak in there and try it out.

The phrase molon labe (Ancient Greek μολὼν λαβέ molṑn labé; reconstructed Ancient Greek pronunciation [molɔːn labé]; Modern Greek pronunciation [moˈlon laˈve]) means "Come and take". It is a classical expression of defiance reportedly spoken by King Leonidas I in response to the Persian army's demand that the Spartans surrender their weapons at the Battle of Thermopylae. It is an exemplary use of a laconic phrase.

Molon labe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's an expression those of us in the "gun culture" use against those that advocate confiscation.

Awesome!
I did a 5k on Sat with my boys too. My little guy finished, but walked for most of it...but he's 4. It's so much fun to run with the kids!

With regards to interval training, one way to incorporate that type of training in your running is something called a fartlek (yeah, silly name :) ) It's basically kicking up the pace for short periods of time during a longer, easier paced run.

Thanks for the info on interval running. I think it is great that you ran with your kids. There was several kids in the race yesterday and it was nice to see them participating. It just seemed like everyone was having a good time at the race. They were very friendly. We were raising money for a girl who has cancer and everyone there seemed kind and compassionate. My daughter seemed to really like it. It's good to have fun running a race and help others at the same time. They gave us a paper about another race for a fundraiser for someone with cancer in June. It will be a 3.5 mile cross country race. I have many races coming up. My son said he will try a 5K this summer and he has never done one before. It seems it is becoming more of a family affair.

I used to run a lot but I haven't been doing it lately. I would do hills once or twice a week to help with my running. It helps a lot!! I usually ran alone just listening to my iPod (probably not safe) and tune everything else out. My feet would get so messed up that it was embarrassing wearing sandals in the summer. Lol I miss it...

I am sorry you had to give up running. It is a loss when you have to give up something that was meaningful to you. I bet you do miss it. If you are like me you probably think about trying it again at times in hope that things would work out better next time.
May God bless you and guide you and give you peace.
