ug. Best rpg.....

I used to play runescape way back in the day when it started.. It's bad.. It is so ba.. I don't even want to start on it.

Play a real MMO if you can afford, such as Guild Wars, World of Warcraft, or Eve Online.

If you can't afford it, play Anarchy Online. It's free.

I've tried runescape, and I didn't like it. As for getting one that costs something, make sure you know what you want before you buy. If you want to hack and slash, World of Warcraft is a good choice. If you want to actually Role-Play, I think FF XI has that, and the RP servers of Neverwinter Nights I've heard are good.

I thought Runescape quite good! Im level 39, i only play it on week ends!
But hey, people have different opinions...

For an online game played through a browser and written in java, yeah, it's good. But compared to anything that is its own program and is written in a language meant for games, it doesn't look that great anymore.

Yeah I played it some years ago, I didn’t like it at all either. Some people like it, but it’s certainly not the best out there. Yes Anarchy Online is a very good mmorpg, in fact I played it maybe five hours over the weekend on my froob account. Other than that Eternal-Lands is pretty good if you like the isometric type mmorpg like runescape. Eternal-lands runs in a regular windows client (not in a java postage stamp) and is fully free to play.

If you are looking for the “best” mmorpg, Eve online is suppose to be the best going right now. This is not judged on how many subscribers it has(no blizzard cult following), though it has many, but judged on gameplay and such. I haven’t played it myself but that’s what many sensible charts say.

What may be the best in the future, I’m really looking at Lord of the Rings Online. If VU games doesn’t drop the ball on this one they may have a winner. It’s hard to say though, I hear D&D online (about to try demo) was a bit of a disappointment which is made by the same company making lotro.

That's unfortunate. That was the only MMORPG I was contemplating buying, just because it sounded like it encouraged roleplaying and having fun more than powerleveling.

It’s not so bad, well apart from that magic stuff - which I don’t care much for. The main gripe by players is how easy it is to level. I mean look, five hours of play and you are at level two (personal experience), you could never ever do it that fast in PnP. They say maxing out is terribly easy.

Other thing is the graphics requirement, a lot of people complain about that. No problems here though, have it set on the best quality and pull 40+FPS.

Other than that, there is no real exploration, you are locked into sections of a city until you progress through just about all the quests for that particular section before you can move to the next one. Not sure about higher levels but at level two you will still be at the starting port grinding away at all the instanced quests… and that’s all there is, their ALL instanced.

Last gripe (but not all of them), no first person mode. I remember when NWN was released and people were griping about there being no first person, well yet another DnD game locked in 3rd person mode.

Anyway, try before you buy, there is a free download and 7 day trial that only requires a valid email address. I’m hoping they do LOTRO better than this, at least I hope there is a 1st person mode… but I don’t recall if they were including that or not.
