  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I remember hearing a while ago that the Matrix had some references or allegories to Christianity. I was just wondering if I am right to say that it has none. My friend told me a while ago that some things in the Matrix represented Christianity and I was wondering can anybody back him up, he said he heard about it from the Animatrix or somewhere. I remember him saying that Neo represented Jesus Christ. His death on the Final Matrix represented Jesus dying on the cross for our sins and that is why he laid his arms out in a cross after he died. Also Agent smith represented sin who Jesus died for. The people from the city of Zion represent the saved believers and the people trapped in the Matrix represent the rest of the non-believers. I cant remember anything else but can anyone back this up???

It kinda makes sense..... But I also recently heard that the Wachowski brothers did not even write the script for the first Matrix, that some lady won a lawsuit because she wrote the script for the original back in the 80's. It might help explain why the first movie was genius and the second two got much worse.

But back ontrack, I think that certain parts of the movies could definately be a christian allegory.

The city is called "Zion" which is in the bible. The ship had Mark something??? on it, I think it was a verse.
Morpheous was trying to teach Neo to "free your mind, and just believe", which resembles the Christian faith. The fights were done based on faith, which is the same as spiritual warfare.

There are also references to other religions.

The Matrix Trilogy is an amalgamation of Christianity, along with other religions and philosophies.

You have to be well versed in philosophers like Kant, Nietzsche, Plato, etc, as well as different mythologies to FULLY appreciate all of the aspects that The Matrix touches on. I can't get into all the details, but you'd be surprised at the amount that my friends and I were able to extract from the movie.

And the correlation between The Matrix and Christianity is very clear and evident. And in the third one, Neo died with his body in the form of the cross after he 'saved' Zion. My wife and I had a good laugh with that one.

I walked out of the theater hating it. By the time I got home(less than 4 miles away), I really liked it. That end has a lot of symbolism. It also to me draws on the Aurthurian legends(which in some ways parallels the story of Christ). Reminded me of the last scene from Excalibur where King Aurthur is floating off.

I don't see how anyone could enjoy the two sequels without seeing all the parallels to Christianity and other things.

Huge amounts of symbols, references, parallels. I think there's a book around called Matrix and the Bible, though I may be crossing "Matrix and Philosophy" with "LOTR and the Bible" in my head.

I totally agree with silentpoet, in that both sequels are instantly hatable, but after a while, from thinking about what they represent, can be liked a whole lot. I even ended up buying both on DVD to study them.

I remember when I was 15 I wrote an essay about the original Matrix and its Christian parallels. I got an A.

Allow me to go on record and say that yes, by all means, is the Matrix Trilogy loaded with Christian allegory. I can say that without a shadow of a doubt in my mind. Yes, the downside is that much of it is based in Gnosticism. However, I choose to take only the Christian elements of it to heart. My website, MatrixFans.net has a lot of symbolism on the movie.
