It is natural for someone to place a post in the Main Forum. If we make the Main Forum from the general nature of an internet forum we are laying down a minefield. People will naturally do there what they come to the internet to do. All general debate is best done in the Main Forum.

I think the debate should be in the Main Forum and the sterile room of church positions should be in a sub-forum. It is debate and discussion that draw people to a forum. I am amazed at those who view Internet forums as some kind of evangelistic tool.

Unfortunately, people here seem to get too nasty when they debate. Debate should occur (it is what is interest, I agree). But moving it to it's own forum should make the place a bit more pleasent.. which seems to be needed.

JM
(Honestly, more forums have worse attacks then here. The issue with attacks here are that they are often religious in nature.)

Well, since we're voting on every rule that is adopted in the SDA forum, that's up to the members to decide. The outcome of this poll will determine the rule. So far, the majority seems to favor a non-debate main forum.

If something becomes debate, I would suggest just moving it in general. Many issues come about by accident, and I don't like post deletion unlses the post was malicious.

I agree. I don't think that an original poster who asks a question about Adventist beliefs, for example, should be penalized for starting a thread that turns into a debate. It should simply be moved to the debate sub-forum if that happens. Many non-Adventists who want to ask questions here would have no idea what subjects would be likely to result in debate.

I agree that many NON-Adventists wouldn't have a clue what would cause a debate, but the way the rule being voted in is stated....they have a choice as to whether to pose a question in the debate of non-debate section.

If they choose the non-debate section, then that thread should absolutely remain no debate. Even if that just means copy/pasting from our official fundamental belief statement.

We agree it should be non-debate. We are talking about not punishing those who don't know the rules. Or who don't intend that the rules be violated. Therefore, moving the 'offending' thread, rather then deleting it (and if you delete more then a couple of the posts, you might as well delete the thread).

That's why, if this rule is approved, I am not in favor of giving warnings or closing threads when they're started by people who are just doing what people "naturally do" in an internet forum--unless they repeatedly do so after being informed of the rules. CF is going to be confusing because there will be so many different rules for the congregational areas. We will most likely have people breaking our rules inadvertently. Ours is not the only congregational forum that is disallowing debate in the main forum, however. For example, Conservative Christians also has a non-debate main forum and a debate sub-forum.

Sometimes people need to be protected from themselves.

Maybe, but all you can do is state your opinion. The voting will go on, and if some of the rules turn out to be unworkable, they can be reconsidered later.

This poll is to decide whether or not to add language to the wiki regarding guidelines for the main Adventist forum.

Here is the proposed addition:

1.1 This is a non-debate area, reserved for fellowship and questions. Questions on doctrines and beliefs can be asked in the Main SDA Forum. Questions that are likely to lead to debate should be asked in the Debate/Discussion Sub-forum.

1.2 To avoid confusion and debate, questions posed in the Main SDA Forum will generally be directed to official church statements such as the Fundamental Beliefs. This is to provide clear and consistent answers to questions without provoking debate.

According to our wiki rules formation guidelines voted previously, this will be a public poll and will last for four days. Only Adventists who joined the forums before July 4, including some regulars who bear other icons may participate.

Please check the wiki discussion here for further rules issues coming up soon. We need input from everyone.

Tall73, it has suddenly come to mind that from personal belief I try to rest on the Sabbath even on the forum, and if I am elected as a 'mod' I would not normally check on things on the Sabbath. So I have proposed a way to still take care of what needs to be taken care but keep things to minimum so we can work with a 'skeleton crew' of 'moderators on the Sabbath.

I accepted with the understanding that I can only give my undivided attention when I am not at work (9-5 EST) and of course Sabbath I set aside, when I feel I should only 'mod' to help a brother or sister that has fallen into a 'deep hole' to help them out.....This leads me to a important point, we need to set up a Quiet Time in the main debate forum so moderators can also have rest from their labors if possible, comparable to a Adventist nurse or doctor not working if possible on the Sabbath. I am presenting it so we can vote to incorporate in the rules but need your help in putting it up for a vote.

Proposal?-Quiet Time in the forum on the Sabbath...
Quiet Time- A time of no debate on the Sabbath in the Debate/Discussion Sub-forum so 'mod's' can rest, they could be on 'call' like a doctor or work just as a nurse to assist as needed in case sometime comes up, but there would be a no debate Quiet Time from sundown friday to sundown saturday in each timezone as that causes the most common issues. Moderators would still be available, just at a reduced 'skeleton crew' schedule or voluntary basis.

Note:The proposal can be amended as needed as long as everyone understands that 'mods' also need their Sabbath and allow for it.

Reddogs, I don't think backlogs have ever stopped a forum before. You will get to the reports when you get to them. Hopefully, no reports will be generated on the Sabbath because the mean ones will be on their best Sabbath behavior. (God help us when the Sabbath has more power to guide behavior than the Creator of the universe).

Well, thats what I am striving for, and 'time out' for the misbehaving posters, and a little peace and quite on the Sabbath. Just think of the testimony that would give to everyone coming to see and read about Adventists and that even on the internet they 'rest' on the Sabbath.. It's not perfect but its the principle of it....

They would just think we are faking it on Sabbath. It would be best if we just got converted. Period.

Doctors and nurses do it all the time finding ways and schedules to have their Sabbath, so I am sure we can find a way but we need everyones help........
