  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ruining the Earth.

Ridicule is an entirely legimate response. Just as it is when people:

- argue the earth is 10,000 years old;
- claim that vaccines are a threat;
- say that the earth is flat;
- claim that Donald Trump is not a clown (at least in terms of his public behaviour).

Here's the thing: when someone holds a patently wacky idea, to put away the "weapon" of ridicule effectively confers an aura of respectability on a nutty idea.

It is perfectly legitimate, and arguably highly responsible, to ridicule certain ideas.
These people may agree with your idea that ridicule is legitimate....

what about people who blithely understate the obviously anomalous power of religion throughout human history?
Not sure I know what you mean. If you are suggesting that it would be foolish to claim that religion has not played a powerful role in human history, I would agree. But I see no one making such a claim.
