Routers for DSL

Ok. I am an Internet Service Representative with ALLTEL's internet help desk. I am a bit confused when you are supposed to use the management cable to connect the PC and the router in order to telnet into the router. Is there anybody out there that can explain that to me. PLEASE!!!!

Do you know what the model/make of the router is? I am not sure what ports are available on your router.

AngelaDawn - I looked over the 2510 specs and it loks similar to all the SOHO DSL router/hubs I've seen. I think the "management cable" it is speaking of is the Ethernet cable - you should be able to connect and telnet using that fine.

Usually a management cable refers to an RS-232 cable... I don't even think the siemens ships with that cable... Certainly not any home newtowrking solution I've seen

To answer your question, there is no special cable on the back of it according to Siemens. Just the typical RJ-45. It appears to have a web interface similar to the way mine does it. Just type the IP address of the router in your browser and you should be good to go.

I'm not so sure about using just a regular RJ-45 cable to connect to one of those. There are several different types of RJ-45 cables, Straight-throughs, cross-overs, and roll-overs. There is a difference in the wiring map of each cable. In order to telnet into the configuration of a router like that you'd need a roll-over or console cable with a db9 female end to attatch to your system. However, you would only need to do that when changing the configuration settings. This is what I know true for all routers, and I don't think that this is a newb router so it should be the same.

AngelaDawn - I'd try just what drfeelgood and I mentioned - connect with a regular ethernet cable (rj-45 on both ends) and either telnet to the ip of the router (probably 192.168.0.1), or use a web interface. I'd be surprised if the router didn't have a web interface. Try using IE or netscape and hitting the ip address.

also, when you are connecting to the router, make sure to use the LAN ports, not teh WAN port. The LAN ports (4 of them) are for the computers on the inside of the router, whereas the WAN port will be connected to the DSL router provided by the phone company.


Nomad16 - you're totally right about that type of management cable, and when you get into large workflow and corporate routers, it's certainly the lowest level of connection to the router you will make. The Efficiency 2510 is a home router, and it doesn't have a console port on it.

Hmm, that's wierd. I've never seen a router without one. Well in that case I'd have to agree with you about loging in through the web interface.

True about the rest of your post.. I hope you don't mind if I point out one thing. Usually the IP you mentioned is the start of a bank of IP's reserved for the internal network. My router IP is 192.168.1.1 You enter that and a login screen pops up.

Yep... i think mine at home is 192.168.1.1 as well... the whole 192.168.*.* subnet is reserved...

You can find out exactly what IP the router runs by default in the manual...
