I would like to humbly submit a Bible study for the Christian, and especially the new Christian. It concens a book of the Bible that I consider to be one of the most difficult in the New Testament: the Epistle to the Romans. The little thought I want to pass to you is wrapped around the small word ,"impute".
Rather than explain Scripture by means of non-Scripture, I want to see if we can correctly understand this word from the Word.
"Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin" Romans 4:8
Going back to chapter 3 of Romans, we recall that "As it written, there is none righteous; no, not one." Romans 3:10 "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God."Romans 3:23.. The Bible plainly says that EVERYBODY has commited sin. The Ten Commandments, the Moral Law given by God to man, is made up of 10 simple little requirements. You are not to 1) have any god but God 2) not make any idols 3)don't use God's name in vain 4) honor the Sabbath 5)Honor your mom and dad 6) don't kill 7)don't commit adultery 8) don't steal 9) don't tell false tales or lies 10) don't covet . And that was the EASY Ten Commandments! Jesus Christ taught in Matthew chapter 5 that the very thought and intention of the heart was held responsible before God. AND HE KNOWS ALL YOUR THOUGHTS!
So,the verse we have before us, Romans 4:8, says that ,since we know everybody sins, Blessed is the man whom the Lord will not impute sin.
That is, Almighty God choses to NOT put the record of sin, along with it's punishments (like DEATH Romans 6:23, HELL Luke chapter 16 ,THE WRATH OF GOD Revelations chapter 19 & 20) on some people's account.
So,by God's choice, when He sees and thinks about my record, He choses to IMPUTE a clean slate to me. But He does something else, too:
"And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness." Romans 4:22
Abraham, the Friend of God, was informed by God that he would have a son,and through this son all the earth would be blessed. This was while Abraham was very old , as was his wife Sarah. But because God made certain promises, which we call a Covenant, with Abraham, Abraham believed those promises, without any evidence, and GOD COUNTED THIS FAITH ON HIS RECORD. Because of his faith, Therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. So, as Abraham was human, and sinned like you and I , the SIN on his record was removed, but the RIGHTEOUSNESS which he did not do was counted in his place. And I cannot stress this enough: the placing of righteousness on Abraham's account was due ONLY TO FAITH by the FREE GRACE OF GOD.
The Story so Far: Abraham's Record SIN
Abraham's sin record as God was pleased to see it: CLEAN
Abraham's record instead: RIGHTEOUSNESS
And this was "imputed" by God because of Abraham's faith.
Well, that's nice, but what does that mean to ME AND YOU????
"But for us also to whom it shall be imputed, IF we believe on Him that raised Jesus our Lord from the dead." Romans 4:24
As Abraham believed God and His Covenant Promises, without proof or any evidence, so we are also eligible to have RIGHTEOUSNESS applied to our account, instead of SIN , by faith. In other words, God Almighty is pleased to view all those persons who are truly trusting for their forgiveness and eternal well being in Christ alone, to view their record as CLEAN of sin and with merit, cleaness, good, RIGHTEOUSNESS applied instead.
IMPUTED. IMPUTED IMPUTED..
"Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification." Romans 4:25
"For the wages of sin is death "Rom.6:23 "But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." So ,Jesus' death was a part of the Covenant! He never sinned, but HE DIED, but not for Himself...In YOUR PLACE! So your FAITH in that Covenant means God can REMOVE THE SIN and put all good things about YOU in it's place. All RIGHT things, or "Righteousness".
So, why is the Resurrection of Christ so important, to our very salvation?
Remember, the "wages of sin is death", so Jesus took His beloved people's sin on Himself...("WHO WAS TEMPTED IN ALL POINTS LIKE AS WE ARE, YET WITHOUT SIN.") and SO HE WAS ELIGIBLE TO PAY OUR SIN DEBT ... And His death paid for His people. His elect. So three days later He rose from the dead, as the Bible says death could not hold Him, after our sins were paid for and destroyed forever. This PROVES to us that OUR SINS REALLY ARE PAID FOR...by His glorious Resurrection!
And....can you believe it?..the GOOD and RIGHT-ness of JESUS put on my account instead.
Thank you,my Lord.
