In the end of Romans 7, Paul, after having described what the Sinful Nature is and how it affects us, poses the question WHO WILL HELP ME ESCAPE..>? It's important to notice the IF in vs 16 and I think 25. These two segments are Paul posing a hypothetical, IF THIS, then that.

Romans 8 is the solution.

It starts out with the MIND set on one or the MIND set on the other, that is, sinful nature/sarx/flesh, or God's Spirit. NO WHERE IN HERE DOES IT MENTION SOME PERSONAL SPIRIT.

In romans 8:9 the solution is revealed, IF you are indwelt by the spirit, you are no longer in the flesh. So it's not an internal battle between the two for Primacy of your body as a host, it's a matter of the Spirit of God working ON you so he can get IN YOU.
