  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death. - Romans 7:5

If God does not tempt anyone to sin, then how is it that the law tempt us? Or am I just not understanding Romans 7 right? I've been reading Romans today and I feel like I understand hardly anything that Paul is writing. I have one of those minds that feels like I have to understand it all yet these scriptures are tuff.

There's nothing wrong with the Law and God isn't trying to lure us into sin. It's a way of letting us know that sin is there, all sin is at enmity with God. When it sees the righteousness of God witnessed to in the Law it is by nature opposed.

When the Law says "don't", we do, because of sin. That's what Paul is saying here. As Steve wrote just above me, forbidden fruit tastes the sweetest.

Our passions are aroused all the more when we are told not to do something. The Law does not increase sin; but the Law, on account of the flesh, causes sin to increase. The very thing which condemns sin and reveals the righteousness of God can be the very thing which magnifies sin in my members through my own decaying flesh and fallen passions. So that the good that I wish to do I do not do, and the evil I do not wish to do I do, "Who can save me from this body of death?!"

Hello,

In Romans 7:21-25, Paul made a clear distinction between the law of God, which he delighted in obeying, and served with his mind, and the law of sin, which held him captive and served with his flesh. This is a summary of what Paul had been speaking about previously, so the law of sin or evil inclination came about to increase tresspasses (5:20), to stir up sinful passions to bear fruit unto death (7:5), held us captive (7:6), gave sin it's power (7:8), deceived Paul through the commandment and killed him (7:11), and caused him not to do the good that he wanted to do (7:13-20), while God's Law is not sin, but reveals what sin is (7:7), is holy, righteous, and good (7:12), is the good that Paul did not blame for bringing death to him (7:13), and is the good that he wanted to do (7:13-20). So the issue is not that God tempts us to sin by giving us His Law, but that the law of sin seizes the opportunity through God's Law to deceive us and cause us to sin.

I have been wondering what exactly the law of sin is. I'm going to re read and look into this idea more.

It's simple , breaking law tempt us just as saying to a child to not do something tempt kid to do it , even tho they would never think about doing it .

Law is simple mirror , it does not make you clean you can just look and see yourself dirty , you clean yourself by accepting Christ and then confessning sins to him.
