  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Greetings in Christ,

There is a Romanian Orthodox church not far from my house. Are they in full communion with the Orthodox Catholic denomonations (Russian Orhtodox, Greek Orthodox) or are they viewed as heretics?
The Romainian Orthodox Church is truly Orthodox.

I proudly say I am a romanian orthodox.
It is to much surprise to me that you found the romanian church, because romanian (and orthodox in general I think) church does nothing to spread it's message.
Perhaps it is diffrent in USA perhaps not.
If you decide to get into the romanain orthodox church(or any orthodox church), I congradulate you and wish to wellcome you as a brother in Christ.
Let His grace lead you.

Greetings, brother -

I'm afraid I must respond to this: orthodox in general I think) church does nothing to spread it's message.

I am a former Baptist who is now a member of the one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church today, because it was Orthodox folks who reached out to me when I was hurting and had almost completely lost my faith. I am aware of several Orthodox ministries on-line, one of which I help run. There are Orthodox mission groups which go and live in other countries for years on end (no two week drive-by evangelizing) for the purpose of starting missions and bringing the lost into the Life of the Church. And of course, as Orthodoxy is the oldest expression of Christianity, obviously someone somewhere helped folks find Christ's Church - or else no one would be Orthodox today!

No, we don't go door to door (which is fine with me - those encounters make most folks uncomfortable and if it DOES produce a "conversion", it's often short-lived). But as someone who was brought into the True Faith by the witness of love of folks I saw living out Christ within the Church - I can say that it's not true that the Church "does nothing".

May God bless and keep you.

The newly-married Katherine

In my experience, the church is very active missions-wise. For instance, check out the Orthodox Christian Mission Center. Its amazing to think that the tiny amount of Orthodox Christians in America support missions and missionaries in so many countries! Of course, they work in conjunction with the larger Orthodox churches from traditionally Orthodox countries too.

Also, check out International Orthodox Christian Charities, another US based Orthodox mission/relief agency. While they do more charity work than outright evagelism, that is certainly a form of missionary work.

That is grate news, I was saying, just as others complained, that in Rmania, we get all sorts of "chrstian" sects picking you on the street and no orthodox mission; I'm glad this is not the case everywhere.
I would think that the Orthodox Church in Romania is still recovering from communism. The western churches have tons of money to pour into Romania to try to convert the Orthodox to other things. The OCMC and IOCC listed in my above posts both do work in Romania.

I think that the Eastern Orthodox Church is a union of a number of mainly (14?) autocephalous provinces (there are I believe five autonomous provinces as well) that are united as One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. The Ecumenical Patriarch (I believe it is Bartholomew I? pardon my spelling) is the "first among equals" of the Church.

Am I correct?

Surprisingly as it might sound, when the comunists were here, more people went to the Church (perhaps not by good reasons but anyway) and people were more united then.
Also the comunist regime persecuted other cults worse than the orthodox -- because orthodox was a majorty and it was eassier to "control" (I mean by this not to work with, but in any case arest, torture, take out) the heads of the romanian orthodox Church than other sects;
So orthodox priests had it eassy since there was really no other strong church in Romania.
(I'm not saying comunism was good eighter -- not for the church not for anyone -- those unwholy people demolished churches, arested priests, beated them, tortured them and so on)

There are few Romanian Orthodox Churches in the US compared to Greece and Syria. I only learned about there existence yesterday when I asked my friend about the patriarch.

There are mnay missionaries in Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Africa. You know, our church is beautiful. I can honestly say I do not know anyone who converted from Orthodoxy.

There is a woman at our parish that became Presbyterian for most of her adult life, but has recently returned to the Orthodox Faith in her late 70s!

I know the former president of Macedonia (whow was recently killed in a plane crash) left Orthodoxy to become a Baptist.

A friend of mine who was at his sister's parish in El Paso over Pascha came back and told us about one of the new converts there - a 93 year old Jewish man!!!! Glory to God!!!!

I've known people who have converted from Orthodoxy. The doctor who treated my husband's (then-fiance) sleep apnea was a cradle Greek who had converted to some "Church of God" group/cult based in Cleveland, TN, and spent a good portion of our consultory appointment lecturing us on how wrong we were to be in such an awful Church!!! oy!!!!!!
