  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This whole debate about rock music is just plain silly. Many of the people who started this back in the 1950's listened to classical music and operas. Which have much about rape and murder and other issues which we see in rock, rap and so forth. So, therefore, is all music evil?! All of the music we use in Churches today is "new" and was not around in the first one thousand years of Church history (except for the odd very old one in some hymn books!)

I never heard Jesus have a go at different types of music, especially the stuff that He didn't like, or have I missed something! He wasn't even the slightest bit interested in this type of stuff. Therefore, we should not be also!!!!!!:preach:

In otherwords, enjoy what YOU like and let everyone else enjoy what they like. God created us all to be different not all likeing the same music, the same theological exactness, the same sports teams, the same...., the same............................................

If anyone can't stand to listen to certain songs, maybe they should buy their own Cd's cassettes and play them instead of the radio. Or you can probably tape the radio if you miss it and stop the tape when they play songs you don't like.
Switchfoot isn't that bad of a band--I like the song "Twenty-Four"--I think perhaps the repetition is getting to you. I kind of like the one called "Amy's Song"--I wonder why? I like the song "Don't Be There" as well--but that one might actually make one think they might be saying something about suicide as it asks the question, "Did I get shot or shoot myself?"
Sometimes to me, it doesn't matter so much as to being the coolest sounding background music as the words. Hence the reason for my liking of Steve Taylor. The album Squint was probably the best musically--but I can get into "Meltdown at Madame Tussaud's" and "Am I in Sync?" pretty well. Hiwever, some of his older sounding musical background are somewhat annoying--sound closer to jazz than rock, but I think that was due to the time period in which they were released.
As to why I like Stryper and Michael Sweet, the music is pretty good in even some of the older metal--I was pretty into the ballads too, so the band worked for me. I also love to sing along and the lyrics are pretty clear and Michael's voice is just really good to sing with and challenging to keep up with.
I like lots of Christian artists--and varying types of music--as long as it suits my tastes. I even like Ballydowse, which is as probably as far to the left a Christian group can get and odd music sort of traditional tunes mixed with modern beats. I like Chapman and Michael W. Smith. I like MXPX. I like the Insyders and O.C. Supertones. I like Petra and John Schlitt's solo albums. I like Whiteheart. I like Mark Lowry. I like Guardian. I like D.C. Talk. I like Prayer Chain. I like the Swirling Eddies. There are so many others I like, but I will quit naming as the list will get monotonous.
