  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

On a more non-political note, why don't these bands do something more constructive with their music..."Rock to Learn How to Rock." Certainly rocking to obtain something is better than rocking against something?

I seriously think, if I ever get a chance to book a concert, I might have to call it "Rock Against Bands that Rock Against Stuff"

practically everyone else in this thread said:
Blah blah blah

Rock bands that sing political songs are very similar to Christian rock bands. So when people in this thread call singing a "protest song"-- or whatever you want to call it-- "whining", simply because they disagree with what the band is saying, it's the height of irony. They'd probably praise a Christian rock band which, essentially, does the same thing. Can't the same question you proposed here, cjedick, be asked of Christian rock bands? Instead of singing about god's infinite love, why don't they go put their money where their mouth is, working on good causes? I'm sure many of them do, just as many lefty politically-charged rockers do. Bono is a very cliched example, but a good one nonetheless. So in the future let's see if we can assess our own side before we throw out the double standards.

To the OP: No, there is nothing wrong with that.

"I am he, as you are he, as you are me, and "WE" are all together!"

I never said I liked Christian music...not once...nor have I ever praised one Christian Rock band or Christian Rock song. So your argument is just about useless. Along with your argument, Bono too is useless. So let's see if "we" can complain at someone else. What was the double standard again?

I was simply expressing that I don't much like bands that "Rock Against Bush" or rock against anything for that matter. It's annoying and serves to accomplish nothing except (1) rally a bunch of mindless "music" fans in support of a cranky cause (which means they'll jump into each other for a few hours) or (2) inflate the egos of these musicians who think that their rocking is REALLY making a difference. Now I'm sure these two points make me sound like the bad guy. But I don't much care. Actually, there's probably a third motivation--(3) it serves to increase support in the direction you throw your political weight...which, perhaps, increases album sales and generates a bit of a profit.

I think music is a form of expression. And I reserve my right to maintain that I like some peoples' forms of expressions and dislike other peoples' forms of expressions. Quite frankly, I don't like your written expression. It is confrontational, and I hate when people make suggestions by using the word "we." It reminds me too much of grade school. So next time "we" use the word "we," perhaps "we'll" rewrite our sentence to display that "we" are simply politely suggesting. This way, "we" won't sound so condescending.

How did I do guys? I don't think I swore once?! It's hard to sound funny and forceful without the occassional explitive, isn't it? Oh well, I'm pretty sure I was a good boy.

Personally, I think hmm...celebrities speaking out about politics (other than "go vote" and such) is pointless.
To some degree, maybe it may be good. But it probably does more harm than good cause there will be those kids who can't think for themselves...have no idea about "the other side of the story". Basically they are clueless, jumping on the bandwagon just because their favorite celebrity said so.
I'm sure it may raise awareness for some people, but that isn't always the case.

Actually it's funny that even with all the "ROCK THE VOTE!" and "VOTE OR DIE!" tactics that MTV and such utilised...only 14% of the youth population voted...

...For those keeping track, that's the exact same amount as voted in the 2000 election.

I kinda wish I hadn't voted at all. I think I'll vote for Peyton Manning in 2008.

Froggy, I thought we were going to hold off NFL debates out of respect for music, but you asked for it. 7-0, every other team has at least two losses, and the Pats will be handled cruelly Monday Night for their disrespect for the Colts in recent postseasons.

There, I said all of that without mentioning that the Pack is 1-6 after Brett threw five picks.

...whoops. :sorry: ;)

It's not Favre's fault that he has no capable receivers! The man is an amazing quarterback when he has people he can actually throw to. I'd like to see Satan Manning or his brother play as well as Favre has after going through what he's had to. If anything needs to be worked on, it's their defense. (Seeing as they've all been injured).

And need I mention that all of the Colts wins were "Oh my! Peyton Manning threw 8 touchdown passes against a team that was 7-7 (or worse) last season!" (with the obvious exception of Baltimore)

I am unimpressed.

By the way, Bruschi is back, so I predict this Monday Night Football will be no different from the other games between the Patriots and the Colts.

CUT THAT MEAT!

First off, anything I've said against Favre in the past has been in jest. He has to be one of the best figures in NFL history, and his success in the '90s speaks for itself. I've always admired him for his mental toughness. With that being said, he had an all-star team to work with during his peak. IMO, he takes way too many needless risks, lobbing the ball 40 yards down the field in hope of one of his receivers running under it (and has always done this).

As far as Eli, he's made huge strides this year. He's my vote for most improved right now.

Are you serious? Although the disparity last year wasn't quite as bad as this year, the fact remains that the NFC is weak. The Colts played New England, San Diego, Jacksonville, and Denver. Although the defense was lacking, no one has shown that they can consistently stop the Colts' offense in a dome. With the way the defense has played this year, the Colts have chosen to run the ball more and only break out their fast-paced offense when they need it (St. Louis).

It will be a good game, I hope. However, with Bruschi on the field for most of the defensive plays, the Pats were still lucky to beat the Bills. Very unimpressive. If the weather is fair, I doubt it will be much of a game.

Cut and packaged. :)

I hope Favre either retires soon or finds help with new additions to the Packers. I hope my others posts about this haven't come across as rude, but college football really has me down this year (that's right, Purdue WAS ranked #10 after Week 3). :) All in good fun.

It's all about the NFC North, and the Bears.

So what if they're in an easier division than a high school football team gets, they're still in first.

And as for write-in ballots in 2008, there can only be one name worthy of a vote.......

Lemmy.

Most people would credit their defense for their quasi-success, but I know it's really all because of Orton! :sorry: (Sparring aside, I wish he was still at Purdue)

Umm...he's Peyton's running mate.

By the way, from one Indianer boy to another, you should be shamed for cheering for the Bears, regardless of how close you are to Chicago. ;)
